Death resulted from tuberculosis. The deceased was born in Keokuk county, Iowa, and was past 19 years of age at the time of her death. She had lived in Ottumwa for the past seventeen years. Besides her mother, Mrs. Sara Gates, three brothers and two sisters survive. The are Clyde, Charlie ,and Roy Gates, Miss Hallie Gates and Mrs. Ollie Rhoades. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the South Ottumwa Baptist church. Sidney Catherman, former superintendent of the Rescue mission, will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Shaul cemetery. Obituary From "Ottumwa tri-weekly courier," May 17, 1913: Death has entered another home and cast a gloom over it that can never be removed. The grim reaper of death has called from this home the beloved daughter and sister, Mary Elsie Gates, who died May 6, 1913. She was nineteen years, two months and twenty-three days old. Death resulted despite an operation for appendicitis on November 18, 1912. She only lived five months. She leaves to mourn her loss a mother, two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Sarah Jane Gates, Miss Hallie Gates, Roy Gates and Clyde Gates of Ottumwa; Charles Gates of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Allie Rhoades of Calvart, Kas. While there is a vacant place in this home that can never be filled, the family feels she is safe in heaven. Although she is gone she is not forgotten. She was claimed at the time when the world held the most pleasures and happiness for her, but God knows best, and therefore he took her to dwell with him. She was loved by all who knew her and she had a pleasant word for everyone. Her casket was laden with beautiful flowers which showed the esteem in which she wad held. Sidney Catherman, formerly of the Open Door mission here, conducted the funeral services and spoke words of comfort to the bereaved family. The remains were laid to rest in the Shaul cemetery. She was a loving and affectionate daukghter and a kind and loving sister. During the months of her illness she never complained. May God help and cheer the bereaved mother and family in their loss, is the prayer of her relatives and friends.–Contributed.
