"World-Herald" Newspaper; 10-5-2006 One of Nebraska's best friends, who convinced visitors and travel writers to appreciate the subtle beauty of a prairie state, has died. Mary Ethel Emanuel, a Lincoln author and long-time public relations and marketing manager for the state tourism division, died Wednesday, three months after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was 54. A native of Dodge, Neb., Emanuel wrote five editions of the book, Off the Beaten Path, Nebraska: A Guide to Unique Places, as well as travel articles in several magazines. She wrote the book under the nom de plume Hannah McNally her grandmother's name because she wanted to avoid hurting the feelings of the operators of bed and breakfast inns, restaurants and other attractions she dealt with in her day job. It's all part of her not wanting anyone to feel bad, said a longtime friend, Kim Collins of Lincoln. Dan Curran, a former tourism division boss, said it was common for travel writers working with Emanuel to fall in love not only with the state but with the clever, fun-loving woman everyone called Mary Ethel. People liked being around her, Curran said. In his book My Nebraska, Roger Welsch wrote that Emanuels middle name should be spelled Ethyl due to her endless, explosive energy in promoting Nebraska. Ron Hull, a longtime Nebraska public television producer and chairman of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission, said Emanuel knew every hamlet, back road and off-beat joint in the state. In her Off the Beaten Path books, Emanuel explained the Nebraska tradition of the finger wave from motorists. Try it yourself, she wrote, you'll likely find yourself inexplicably happier. Last month, Emanuel was honored as a Woman of Distinction by the Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women. She was the youngest of six sisters. After the death of an older sister, Monica Foland, Emanuel organized an annual All-Chick Reunion for the women in her family. Emanuel also conducted an annual Peep Art Show, asking co-workers to produce a work of art from the yellow, chicken-shaped Easter marshmallow candies called Peeps. Her motto was work hard, play harder, said Dave Miller, a former state tourism director.
