This was the area that many Alton's settled, were born, raised families, bought farms, married into other Families and sent the kids to school. In 1907 Mae Jones: at 10 years old attended here.(she later married Wesley John Alton) This school served both the Protestant and Catholic families in the area. I am assuming she was born here and they lived on a farm. Mary's Grandmother: Marie Etta (Mae) Jones : (aka Mary); Mae's parents married at an early age, William was 21 and Susan was 17 yrs old. It was common to marry early and several times (not because of divorce) and when you were older as well. The hardships faced by these people were certain to cause an early death to the person ,child and infants. So, they did the best they could given the circumstances and some made it and others didn't .They looked out for each other. The children were born at home and maybe the doctor was there and the midwife or just the midwife and her friends or relatives. The doctor was usually a solitary person whom had to ride the horse or use a car to get to the birthing mother. There were no phones in certain areas so somebody had to go get the doctor to come. Hospitals were a luxury for some. Mae was two yrs old when her father passed away at 34 yrs of age. The voices of the past are silent, but records show he died of acute peritonitis. In 1903 Susan Roach Jones (Mae's Mother), married Hugh Phillips a widower, his wife (Rachel Brigit Taylor) passed away early in the year. Perhaps these people were friends as couples and fate has drawn them together to help out each other. Both had children to finish raising and they would have 2 daughters between them. (Mae) Jones: She had 2 brothers and 2 sisters (and 2 stepsisters) from Hugh Phillips when he married Susan Roach Jones-her mother). Mary Etta Alton, was named after her. Sunday, Apr. 4th, 1897, (aka as Mae or Mary) Her Father - William Newton JONES, worker, born: 1865 , Wawanosh, Married 13 October 1886, died: 8 Nov. 1899-aged 34, Her Mother - Susan ROACH, born: 1870: Kinloss Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Died: 1941 1. Wm. N. Jones, 2. Hugh Phillips. William and Susan had 5 children: Samuel, Annie, Mae (Marie Etta), William John, Susan. Mae and Wesley had four children: Leonard,Wilmer,Elgin and Ruby. In 1928, William Irvin bought the farm back from Wesley. Then they moved to a farm north of Goderich for a few years, (Wesley's Uncle-Joseph Alton's farm) then moved to London and in 1945 onto 710 Adelaide Street, where he worked for the City of London until he retired. Leonard Alton and Ruby lived here until they married their spouses, Leonard marries Mary Thursly in 1947 at age 25 and Ruby Alton marries Virden Rulton at age 29. Wilmer and Elgin are in London working at the CPR rail yards. Elgin marries at age 28 , his wife Jean Clarke in 1954 and Wilmer has been married since 1945 to Margaret Edwards. * Wesley married twice; he had four children to his first marriage and none to his second.
