Description	:	Mary Etta (Ratzlaff) Waltner, the youngest daughter of Sanford and Henrietta (Dahlenburg) Ratzlaff, was born March 13, 1941 south of Avon, South Dakota. She graduated from Freeman (SD) Academy in 1959. After obtaining a teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College in 1961, she taught one year in Menno, South Dakota and one year in Yankton, South Dakota. She graduated from Freeman (SD) Academy in 1959. After obtaining a teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College in 1961, she taught one year in Menno, South Dakota and one year in Yankton, South Dakota. Mary was married to Dr. Lonnie Waltner on July 26, 1963. The wedding occurred in Salem Mennonite Church, with the Rev. J. Herbert Fretz presiding. Following the wedding the couple lived in Omaha, Nebraska where Mary continued teaching while Lonnie earned his degree in medicine. In 1965 the couple moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Lonnie completed his rotating internship at Sioux Valley Hospital. From 1966 through 1968 the couple lived in Jackson, Mississippi while Lonnie served with the Public Health Service. In July 1968,Mary and Lonnie moved to Bridgewater, South Dakota and lived there for the next 40 years. Mary was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in February 2007 and fought her affliction with dignity, strength and the undying devotion of her husband until passing into heaven on October 10, 2008. She was 67. Grace, mercy and gentleness were just a few of the many qualities that made Mary a beloved and trusted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. As she matured, her character came more and more to reflect the Christ she professed and followed her entire life. She faced personal struggles, family tragedies and her final outcome all with an unshakeable faith that witnessed to everyone around her. Throughout her lifetime she sent literally thousands of letters and cards that blessed recipients with specially chosen scriptures and her own heartfelt words of insight and encouragement. Along with praying tirelessly for the specific needs of others, Mary also carried on her parents' tradition of hospitality, readily accepting friends, family and strangers into her home and her life. Mary's church involvement included serving as a deacon, a mentor and an advocate for Mennonite Mutual Aid (MMA). She volunteered much time to activities and organizations in both Bridgewater and Freeman and for many years led a multi-denominational Bible study/coffee fellowship for women in the area. She was also active in the Freeman Hospital Auxilliary and the Diamond Care Auxilliary. Mary's hobbies and interests - including reading, bird watching and travel to scenic locations - reflected her appreciation of the simple pleasures of life and of God's creation. She also took great joy in the companionship of her family, who will forever treasure the many warm memories she was so much a part of creating. Welcoming Mary home are her daughter, Melissa; her parents; and her sister, Delia (Ratzlaff) Knoll. Those remaining include her husband; her sons Jay (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and Lee (Coon Rapids, Minnesota) and her daughter Lynell (Tea, South Dakota); eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother Leonard (Avon, South Dakota); and her sister Helen (Ratzlaff) Claassen (Goshen, Indiana).
