Robert was a farmer. =========================== The Columbian Vancouver, Washington Sunday, 20 December 1998 Mrs. Mary Frances Mattes, 90 of Vancouver Recitation of the rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home for Mary Frances Mattes, who died of a stroke Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Vancouver. She was 90. Mrs. Mattes was born Feb. 8, 1908, in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, and lived in Vancouver since 1945. She worked at the Del Monte cannery for 20 years. She also worked in the laundry at the Sisters of Providence Academy and as a cook and housekeeper at St. James and St. Joseph Catholic parishes. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its choir, St. Catherine's Circle, the Legion of Mary, the St. James Alter Society and Catholic Foresters. She was also a member of St. James Centennial Choir and the Teamster's union. She enjoyed needle work, gardening, traveling, baking, Bible study and music. She was preceded in death by a son, Dwayne L., in 1936; and her husband, Robert J., in 1976. Survivors include two sons, Don of Vancouver and Gerald of East Wenatchee; three daughters, Shirley Hegewald-Nye and Roberta Marchand, both of Vancouver, and Clarice Osborne of Roseburg, Ore.; three sisters, Catherine Foreman and Leona Croatt both of St. Lucas, Iowa, and Rose Crogveek of Olweine, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. James Catholic Cemetery. Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic School building fund, 6600 Highland Drive, Vancouver, WA 98661. ============================ The Oregonian Portland, Oregon Tuesday, 22 December 1998 Mary Frances Mattes A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vancouver, Wash., for Mary Frances Mattes, who died of a stroke Dec. 18 at age 90. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, in Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home. Mrs. Mattes was born Feb. 8, 1908, in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Her maiden name was Huber. She was a sales clerk and played the piano for a German dance band in Iowa. During World War II, she moved to Vancouver, where she was pear peeler for the Del Monte Cannery for more than 20 years, until her retirement in 1973. She was also a laundress for the Sisters of Providence Academy and a housekeeper and cook for St. James and St. Joseph parishes. She was a former member, choir director and organist of the Mission Church, a member and organist of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of the St. James Centennial Choir. In 1935, she married Robert J.; he died in 1976. Survivors include her sons, Don of Vancouver and Gerald of East Wenatchee, Wash.; daughters, Shirley Hegewald-Nye and Roberta Marchand, both of Vancouver, and Clarice Osborne of Roseburg; sisters, Catherine Foremen and Leona Croatt, both of St. Lucas, Iowa, and Rose Crogveek of Olweine, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. A son, Dwayne, died in infancy. Interment will be in St. James Acres Cemetery in Vancouver. The family suggests remembrances to the building fund of St. Joseph Catholic School.
