She was one who made many warm friends, as the constant inquiries regarding her health and the many flowers sent... Read More	Mary G. Naylor was born in Jeffersen County, Ohio, June 21, 1827. In September 1848, she was united in marriage to Thomas Hayne, who died March 30, 1912, and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, La Moille, Iowa. She shared with him the labors and privations of early pioneer life. Always an earnest, helpful worker in everything for the advancement of the community, and a woman, who to her last illness, retained her interest in the affairs of life. She was one who made many warm friends, as the constant inquiries regarding her health and the many flowers sent during the last 2 weeks attest. They came west in 1855, making the trip by boat down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi River to Muscatine, Iowa. They came to Iowa City on the first train that ran over that part of the Rock Island, and from Iowa City, they came overland to Marshall County reaching what was afterwards called Hayne's Grove on May 1, 1855. The journey was made in 5 weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Haynes settled on a farm 6 miles west of Marshalltown, Iowa, which was a village of log houses, and their nearest trading point. Here they lived for 33 years, a third of a century. Their first home, like all the early settlers of those pioneer days, was a log cabin. After two years, this was given for the first school house, and they built one of the first frame houses. The first church services in the community were held in their home, using the veranda for the pulpit while the congregation assembed in the yard. Later they helped build the first church in La Moille. She had a birthright in the Quaker Church, but in later life joined the Congregational Church, remaining a member of that church until her death. She departed this life October 12, 1913, just one month following the 65th anniversary of her marriage. Mrs. Hayne is survived by four children, Daniel of Breckenridge, Colorado; Willard of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Hixson; and Mrs. Barney Johnson of Ida Grove, Iowa. She was one of a family of 9 children, three remaining: 2 sisters, Mrs. Westenhaver of Cranston, Iowa; Mrs. Stone of Johnson, Nebraska; and one brother, Pressly Naylor, of Ft. Morgan, Colorado, who was with her during the last days of her illness. Brief funeral services were conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Barney Johnson, at 10 a.m. Oct. 13, 1913, by Rev. Blue of the Presbyterian Church. The remains were taken to La Moille, Iowa, there to be laid to rest beside her husband and 2 sons.
