Mary Gladys Carter Gentry, 97, passed away, Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at her home on Murray Road, Elkin, N.C. Mrs. Gentry was the daughter of the late Littleton Calhoun Carter and Martha Elizabeth Phillips Carter. She was born in the Benham Community in Wilkes County on October 31, 1911. She was a member of Shoaly Branch Baptist Church and for many years was active in church and Sunday school activities. She was the oldest living member of the Church. She attended school in Wilkes County and graduated from Elkin High School in 1929. She did her teacher training at Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, NC. Mary Gladys retired from teaching in 1972. She was an elementary school teacher for forty years in Wilkes and Yadkin counties. She enjoyed many activities such as gardening and cooking. She loved making beautiful quilts and did many other types of needlework. After retiring, she enjoyed doing genealogy research of the Carter and Gentry Families. Thanks to the loving care of her daughter, Becky, she was able to remain in her home until she passed away. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 year, O.H. "Bill" Gentry; her oldest son, Joseph William "Joe" Gentry; her younger son, Tony David Gentry; her older brother, Baron Gladstone Carter; and her beloved sister, Callie Gladwin Carter Martin. Mary Gladys is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Rebekah "Becky" Gentry of the home, Mary Sharon Gentry Thorn hill and husband Jim of Greensboro, NC. Grandchildren William David "Dave" Thornhill and wife Kristi of Lexington, NC. Mary Elizabeth Thornhill of Austin, TX. Joseph William "Joe" Gentry II of Brevard, NC. Julie Ann Gentry of Brevard, NC, great-grandchildren, Lily, Luke, Sarah and Mary Evann Thornhill; and Finn Rooney. Her niece, Martha Cauble and husband John of Sherman Oaks, California. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Shirley Phillips Gentry Robinson and husband John of Brevard. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, 2:00, September 3, 2009 at Shoaly Branch Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to funeral. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shoaly Branch Baptist Church. The family extends their sincere gratitude to all those who helped Mary Gladys with their compassionate and gentle care, especially medical personnel and family friends and neighbors. Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin is serving the Gentry Family.
