Mrs. James Dolphin, Sr., old and esteemed resident of Cascade and vicinity, died at her home in East Cascade last Thursday evening, January 24, at 6 o'clock. She had reached a ripe old age and her death was due to the infirmities of her years. Deceased was mentally alert to the closing hours of her life. Mrs. Dolphin's maiden name was Mary Gogan and she was born near Droghega, county Louth, Ireland, June 24, 1833, and was therefore 84 years and 7 months old on the day of her death. She came to the United States in 1847, and after remaining about six months in the east, came west to St. Louis, and in 1849, with her family, settled upon, a farm in Richland township, Jones county, where her girlhood days were spent. In March, 1856, she was married to James Dolphin, an industrious and prospering young farmer of the same county. After their marriage they resided in Scotch Grove township, later in Washington township, and in 1867 bought the Litton farm in Whitewater township on the East Farley road. In 1884 Mr. Dolphin was unfortunately stricken with a fatal illness and died the 25th of October, leaving his widow and children to face the problem of conducting the farm. With her good management; and the help of her stalwart and growing sons and devoted daughter, she was successful in her effort and was enabled to assist her children to establish homes for themselves. In the fall of 1900 she retired from the farm, taking up her residence in East Cascade where she lived up to the time of her death, honored and respected for her charities and her nobility of mind and spirit, and unselfish Christian attitude toward her fellow creatures. The continuous devotion of her children and numerous grandchildren was a remarkable outstanding evidence of enduring love. She always had a word of good cheer, and prior to this winter was about her duties with sprightliness and unusual energy of one carrying the weight of so many years. She is survived by the following children: Michael, James and George B., of Whitewater; William O., of Washington township; Mrs. (Nellie) D. A. English, of Richland township; and Mrs. (Annie) P. J. Keefe, of Cascade, and many grandchildren. Two daughters, Mary Ann and Mrs. (Kate) Thomas McGovern, and one son, John Dolphin, of Ryan, proceeded her in death. Among her faithful friends left to mourn her death is Miss Ellen Connolly, who lived with deceased during her last years. The funeral services were held at Martin's church Saturday morning. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. L. Roche, assisted by Rev. Ignatius Conroy, as deacon, and Rev. James Roche, sub-deacon. The pallbearers were eight grandsons of the deceased, Vincent English, Cryil, George, Melvin, Herbert, Leo and James J. Dolphin, and George McGovern. Father Conroy spoke in beautiful and touching words of the memory of the departed, part of which are here given: "Death is always a time of sorrow. We all feel grieved when standing by the lifeless remains of a loved one, friend, sister or brother. But death is sadder still when the one for whom we mourn bore the sweet name of mother. There is no name under high heaven, next to the sweet names of Jesus and Mary so sacred as that of 'mother.' "It is not my purpose to laud the dead, but when called upon to speak for one who led such a life as did she who now lies cold in death before us, no word of praise is out of place. Mrs. Dolphin realized that she was not called to the higher life of the Convent, but to that of a woman of the world, the mother of a family. How well she fulfilled those duties, her many children now plunged in grief at her death, can testify. "I understand she was one of the, early settlers of your beautiful little place, that she is one of those who helped build up the community, and she could well say, of all she possessed, "This is the work of my hands." The standard of the world today is the square deal.' Give the square deal to your fellowman and though you be corrupt at heart, you are living up to the standard. She not only gave the square deal to the world, she gave the square deal to God. And she can now say, as she stands before Him, 'Of all those Thou hast entrusted to my care, not one did I refuse. Now I claim the reward Thou hast promised, now I demand the crown I have earned.' "It is of women of this type who are the strength of the nation, the glory of the Church today. Her religion was her comfort and her consolation. She lived for God, she gave the square deal to God. She was the good mother, the true follower of Christ. "You who have charge of the remains of the deceased, take them to God's holy acre, and place them beneath the sod, but the snow that will cover her grave is not so white as the soul of dear Mrs. Dolphin as she now stands before her God. "Lest any debt may stand against her, you, who have not forgotten her in life, do not forget her in death.
