The sacredness of a happy home circle has again been rudely broken by the visitation of the gaunt destroyer who claims all mortals as his legitimate prey, and Mrs. Mary Garlock has been summoned to the home of the soul, where afflictions and sorrowful partings shall come nevermore. No matter what the bodily afflictions or mental anguish we are called upon to endure, despite the fact that we have passed the limit set for mortal man of three score years and ten; regardless of the fact that in the grave we shall find peace and rest, we all cling to the slender thread of life with a tenacity that knows no weakening, and the poignancy of the grief of those who are left behind is just as great as though the lost one was cut down in the flower of youth and bloom of health. Such is human life. In our blind selfishness we do not realize that mother is happier and that her environments in the future world are much more beautiful than in this, and we mourn because she has left us. Pathetic though the scene may be, we should all rejoice that Mother Garlock is enjoying the fruits of a well spent life, and awaits her children on the other side. In her youth the decedent was known as Miss Mary Haller, and was the eldest child of a family of seven children four sisters and three brothers, the latter having all preceded their sister, and were awaiting her coming. October 4, 1851, she was married to George Garlock, and of this union was born eleven children, nine of whom were present at the funeral. Thus is a happy home rent asunder, which was founded three and one-half miles southwest of Maxwell in March, 1867, when this estimable couple moved to Iowa from Ohio, and they have reared a family in our midst, each of whom are a credit to the community. The funeral obsequies were conducted at Mt. Zion U. E. church, Monday, October 22, 1900, by Rev. J. F. Yerger, of Des Moines, under whose preaching Mrs. Garlock accepted Christianity about thirty years ago, and has ever since been a consistent disciple of the Master. A large number of mourning friends were present to assist in the last sad rites, and to comfort the sorrowing relatives as far as human sympathy can assuage the grief occasioned by death. The ceremonies are over; the home is broken up, and all that can be done is to await a joyful reunion where the loved ones have also heard the sentence: “Well done.”
