Sweitzer, 80, of Monterey, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004 at University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born May 31, 1924 near McDowell, a daughter of the late Winfield S. and Maggie Alice Varner Hammer. Mrs. Sweitzer was a contributing writer for The Recorder, a disc jockey for WVLS radio, a supervisor at Aileen, Inc. for 21 years and managed Jessico, Inc. for seven years. She and her husband owned and operated Midway Station near McDowell for 16 years. She was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church, Highland County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and an honorary member of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce. She was also on the board of directors for WVLS, secretary of the Highland County Fair Association and belonged to various other organizations. Her husband, Ernest T. Sweitzer Sr.; a sister, Freda Thacker and brother, John Hammer, preceded her in death. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest T. Jr. and Joyce Sweitzer of Monterey; a grandson, Steve Sweitzer and his wife Nancy of Monterey; a sister, Anna Lee Pullin of Staunton and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 in the McKendree Cemetery. Highland County Has Lost a Treasure Mary Sweitzer embodied the heart and soul of Highland County. She was more involved with, dedicated to, and interested in the lives of people here than anyone we've ever known. Mary died Wednesday morning at the University of Virginia Hospital after weeks of fighting illness. When we spoke to her the night before her death, Mary's spirits were high; she spoke in her usual, boisterous manner about coming home to catch up on all the goings-on around here. She praised her doctors and supportive friends and family, but she was anxious to return to Highland. As we close in on our deadline for this week's newspaper, the family is still working through arrangements with Obaugh Funeral Home. No details are available as we go to press. But we do know this is sure to be one of the largest funerals ever held in Highland and there's no doubt Mary would laugh about causing such a logistical challenge and traffic jam. She made friends with absolutely everyone she encountered. When she began writing her Odds n Ends column for The Recorder 14 years ago, her network of relationships grew much broader. Her volunteer work in dozens of organizations over the years only endeared her more to those who counted on her to take the lead. Mary attended nearly every event, meeting, and social function. Her loud, crackling laugh and loving nature added fun to the dullest of occasions. No one was a stranger very long in Mary's company. No one wanted to be. Over the years. Odds n Ends for Highlanders has been the most read section of this newspaper. We even proved that a few years ago when we conducted a reader survey. With her vibrant personality, it was only natural that Mary was invited to join the volunteer staff at Allegheny Mountain Radio soon after it branched into this county. Her on-air personality was not one ounce different from her true nature straight-forward, fun loving, deeply caring, respectful and grateful for her blessings. We at The Recorder are grateful for having had the benefit of her wisdom and the pleasure of her company all these years. She took up the challenge of country newpapering with some trepidation, but quickly turned her efforts into a one-of-a-kind, must read Weekly chronicle of real people and real life in the place she loved and staked out as her own.
