Description	:	Mary "Merle" Hatten Bobbitt was the daughter of Benjamin Claiborne Bobitt, who served in the Civil War, and Laura Virginia Littlefield. Benjamin and Laura had five daughters: Eva Margaret (Ettleman), Grace Baylor, Laura Vesta (Brown), Mary "Merle" Hatten (Sitton) and Kathryn Lillian (Bennett). She was born on the family farm near Sidney where she spent her childhood. At the age of about eight she moved with her parents to Sidney where she attended school. She was born on the family farm near Sidney where she spent her childhood. At the age of about eight she moved with her parents to Sidney where she attended school. In July 1901 she united with the Methodist church at Sidney. Merle married Jesse Loren Sitton, son of John and Mary Sitton, on 10 Jan 1907 and they had one son, Gerald, born Dec 1907. Gerald, who married Myrtle Tipton, died in 1964 and is buried in Waterloo, Iowa. Jesse and Merle moved to Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska, early in their married life. Jesse served two terms as sheriff of his county. On 4 Mar 1922 Jesse (Special Agent of the Union Pacific Railroad Police) was shot and killed while chasing a burglary suspect through a rail yard in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jesse had been with the agency for six months. Merle suffered from a severe attack of the flu prior to her husband's death and had never fully recovered. The shock of her husband's death, and a relapse of the flu followed by pneumonia and other effects caused her death on May 11, 1922 at the age of 39 years.
