Born in Hughendon, Alberta Canada on March 24, 1918, she was the oldest living child of B.Y. and Lizzie Elder Couch. When Helen was about four years old, her mother passed away. Her father remarried and in 1924, set off for a new life back in the United States. His original plan was to settle in Oregon, but while visiting his family in Dryden, he found work and the family settled there. Helen spent the rest of her youth in the Dryden area. Upon graduating third in her class from Cashmere High School in 1937, she left home for the big city. In those days, that was Wenatchee. She was first employed in the diet kitchen at the Deaconess Hospital. It was at this time she met Robert "REX" Utt. They were married in November of 1941, in Idaho. Helen and Rex lived their entire married life in Wenatchee. After her two daughters, Rita and Gay-Carol were born, Helen was employed at a local laundry. Later, she worked in all phases of the fruit industry, retiring to take care of her husband before his death. Helen loved flowers and everyone knew that there was not a plant she could not grow. She was gifted at crocheting and she enjoyed traveling and spending time at her home on Lake Chelan. A soft spot was always in her heart for animals. She was a member of the First Methodist Church, The Wenatchee Boating Club and a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. Helen is survived by her daughters, Rita Harvey and husband, Ken of Tacoma and Gay Tabayoyon and husband Jim of Yakima. She has six grandchildren: Robert "Rob" Harvey of Kent, Leanna Harvey of Tacoma, Kristy Patterson and husband Brett of Seattle, David Tabayoyon and wife Anita of Portland, OR, Eric Tabayoyon and soon-to-be bride, Anne of Yakima, and Sean Tabayoyon and wife Cheryl of Yakima. She has two great-grandsons: Max Patterson and Christian Tabayoyon. Although many of her family have preceded her in death, she is also survived by sisters, Gina Moore of Wenatchee, Doris Elliott of Ferndale; brothers, Milton Couch of Cashmere, Orie Couch and Norman Couch of Wenatchee. Going before her were her parents, Lizzie Elder Couch, B.Y. Couch, her stepmother, Gina Couch, her husband of 44 years, Robert Rexford, her sisters, Ruth Couch, Jane Kempton, Mae Bryant, brothers, Andrew and Ben Couch. Those wishing, may make donations to Boys Town, North West Kidney Foundation or the First Methodist Church of Wenatchee. Service of commemoration will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington, Wenatchee. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home until 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service.
