Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 14 at Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 17 in the Scottish Rite Park Penthouse, Des Moines. Mary Helen was born July 22, 1917, to Will Hines and May Morling at Emmetsburg, where she graduated from High School. She graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1939, and later obtained a M.S.W. degree at the University of Denver, Colorado. From 1944 to 1958 she was employed by the American Red Cross - Service to Military Hospitals - in the United States and Germany. Subsequently she was a Medical Social Worker at the V.A. Medical Centers in Dallas, Texas, and Des Moines, Iowa, where she retired in 1979. Mary Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. In Dallas and Des Moines she was active in many organizations, including P.E.O, A.A.U.W., Altrusa International, and the Des Moines Women’s Club. In College she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Mary Helen was a past board member of Home Health Aide and Mobile Meals. Following retirement she especially enjoyed many years as a volunteer with Generations Inc., which after a merger is now Wesley Life. Family, relatives, and friends meant much to her, and she always appreciated spending time with them. From family trips as a child to trips in her retirement years, travel was an important part of her life. She was able to visit all the states and many countries throughout the world. Mary Helen was preceded in death by her three brothers, Edgar, Charles, and Milton. She is survived by her nephew, William H. Morling and wife, Carol of Honey Brook, PA, and nieces Patricia Lehman of Avon, CO, Peggy Humphrey of Concord, MA, and Sharon Simpson and husband William of New York, NY, and their families. Memorials may be made to the WesleyLife - Meals on Wheels or volunteer services, Des Moines Women’s Club, Scottish Rite Park Good Life Fund, or the United Methodist Church, Emmetsburg.
