Withers, 92, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Thursday morning, October 6, 2005, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Mary was born on January 15, 1913 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Ruth (Jennings) Hansen. She moved with her family to South Dakota and they later returned to Iowa making their home in Allison where relatives lived. Mary went to school at Aredale and graduated from the high school at Marble Rock. Moving to Shell Rock, Mary took normal training courses at the Shell Rock High School and was certified to teach in country schools. The local post office needed a clerk and Mary took that position for two years before teaching a year in Butler County. On October 18, 1936 she was united in marriage to Howard Withers in Waverly. They operated a filling station in Allison and also one in Waverly. In 1941 the couple began farming near Shell Rock until 1957 when they moved to Waverly and Howard went to work for Koehring Cranes in Waverly and Mary began a career as a waitress. In 1960 they returned to the farm near Shell Rock for three more years. and in 1963 moved to Shell Rock. Mary worked for the Hub on W. Bremer for several years, the first place in Waverly to serve pizza. For seven years she worked as a waitress at the Waverly Sale barn and worked at restaurants in Clarksville and Shell Rock. She was also the pie maker for the sales barn, claiming that pumpkin was her favorite. Howard died on December 4, 1992 and Mary continued to live in their home until ill health caused her to become a resident of Bartels. Mary was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock. She enjoyed working in her flower beds and playing with a couple of card clubs, and spending time with her family and friends. Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Janet Withers of Waverly; her grandson, Ben, of Cedar Falls and by several nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; two sons, Jerry Lee Withers and Danny Howard Withers; four brothers, Howard, Harvey, Raymond, Jack; and by four sisters, Dorothy, Evelyn, Margaret and Betty. Celebration of Life services will be 10:30 am on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock with Pastor Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 pm until 7:00pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock, and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church Handicap Lift Fund, to Bartels, or to the donor's choice.
