Read More	Mary was the daughter of Leonard and Mary Hoben. She married Jeremiah Vaughan on February 9, 1887 in Spencer, Iowa. They were the parents of 4 children: Stephen, John, and 2 children who died in infancy. Nov 6, 1913 - Emmetsburg Democrat - In our last issue we reported the sad accident which befell Mrs. J.B. Vaughan, who lived a short distance southeast of this city. As stated, she fell through the cellar door, one of her feet catching between the cellar wall and the stairway and tearing the heel and sole of the foot loose to the toe joints. Surgical assistance was promptly secured and everything possible was done to save the limb and relieve her but without success. Evidence of gangrene was observed a few hours after the accident. Wednesday morning her condition became very serious and she passed away at 1:30 in the afternoon. The funeral was held Friday morning. Services were conducted at Assumption church, Very Rev. P.F. Farrelly officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were John McCormick, JP Carney, JH Millea, Wm. Hefley, Michael Fleming and John Fleming. There were many in attendance, a number coming from the Ruthven and Ayrshire neighborhoods to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of their most worthy friend and neighbor. Mary Hoben was born in Clinton county, Iowa, February 22, 1862. When she was quite young her parents moved to Boone county. In 1885 they came to Palo Alto, subsequently residing on their farm in Highland township. February 9, 1887, Miss Hoben was married at Spencer, Iowa, to Mr. J.E. Vaughan. Four children were born to them. Two died in infancy. The husband and two sons survive. The boys are Stephen T., aged 14, and John J., aged 12. Mrs. Vaughan's mother died last winter. Her father, two brothers, Michael and Austin, and two sisters, Mrs. M. Golden of Valley Junction and Mrs. Henry Brash of Deadwood, South Dakota, are the living members of her family. Mrs. Vaughan was held in the highest esteem by her many neighbors and acquaintances. Those who were among her intimate associates in childhood were during the later years of her life, her most ardent well wishers. She was humble, industrious and thoughtful and she never forgot her duty as a wife and mother. Her loyalty to her faith was strong and she was punctual and conscientious in the discharge of the various obligations which it imposed upon her. A most painful physical affliction saddened the closing hours of her useful career but she bore her severe trials with true Christian fortitude and she accepted the outcome with a spirit of resignation that was most edifying. Her mind was bright to the last. She found it hard to part with her husband, two small boys, but she passed away confident that Providence would, in some mysterious way, bless them in return for the great loss they would have to undergo in her death. The Democrat extends sincere sympathy to Mr. Vaughan, the sons and the other relatives in their sorrow.
