Mrs. Woodson was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Martinsville, Va. to the late Justice and Kennon Caithness Whittle. She was educated in the Martinsville school system and graduated from college at The Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C. Read More	SALISBURY - Mary Holt Whittle Woodson, 83, of 317 N. Fulton St., Salisbury, died at her home on Sunday, March 5, 2006, of lung cancer. Mrs. Woodson was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Martinsville, Va. to the late Justice and Kennon Caithness Whittle. She was educated in the Martinsville school system and graduated from college at The Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Woodson was a devoted and active member of St. Luke 's Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Altar Guild. She married Senator H. Nelson Woodson in 1946. Mrs. Woodson was a member of numerous boards and committees, including President of the Margaret C. Woodson Foundation. The Foundation is a charitable trust serving the needs of those in Rowan and Davie Counties, supporting Catawba, Davidson, Livingstone and Mary Baldwin colleges, among other institutions and organizations. She was also a charter member of the Historic Salisbury Foundation, a long-time member of its board and a Trustee Emeritus. Mrs. Woodson co-chaired the first Foundation October Tour, an event held annually since her first successful tour in 1975. In addition she was a charter member of the Andrew Jackson Society of the Foundation, and in 2001, Mrs. Woodson was presented with the Historic Salisbury Foundation Preservation Long-time Leader Award. She was also a member of the Rowan Regional Medical Center 's Hospital Auxiliary and served as a life member of the Davidson College Board of Visitors. Mrs. Woodson was also a member of the Betsy Brandon Book Club, the Traveler 's Club and a member of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina. Her husband Senator H. Nelson Woodson preceded her in death in 1970. Survivors include her son Walter Nelson Woodson and wife Alexandra W. Woodson and their daughter Mary Kennon Caithness Woodson of Middleburg, Va.; daughter Mary Holt Woodson Murphy and her husband J. Gunn Murphy, Jr., their son James Gunn Murphy III and daughter Mary Holt Whittle Murphy of Greenville, S.C.; and a brother Kennon Caithness Whittle of Richmond, Va. Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Luke 's Episcopal Church conducted by The Reverend Whayne Hougland. Burial: Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. tonight, at the home, 317 N. Fulton St. Memorials: Nazareth Children 's Home, P.O. 1438, Rockwell, NC 28138, or St. Luke 's Episcopal Memorial Fund, 131 W. Council St., Salisbury, NC 28144, or to the charity of the donor 's choice. Summersett Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for the Woodson family.
