Read More	CARLTON, Mary Holt (Woolfolk), died peacefully in her sleep at Westminster Canterbury, Richmond, on June 11, 2013. Mrs. Carlton was born Mary Holt Woolfolk in Richmond on March 6, 1915. In 1958 she married attorney Louis C. Carlton; the Carltons lived happily together for some 35 years before his death in 1993. Mrs. Carlton earned a master's degree in the science of social work in 1961. She worked as a social worker for many years, including for a period of time for the City of Richmond as a caseworker for the City's Welfare Department. Mrs. Carlton was an active and engaged member of the Richmond community. She was a longstanding member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Virginia Historical Society, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Poetry Society of Virginia, the Country Club of Virginia, the Virginia Council on Social Welfare and the Jamestowne Society. Mrs. Carlton was especially proud of her efforts in the area of civil rights. She was a co-founder of the Richmond chapter of the National Organization for Women, and through the late 1960s and 1970s engaged in local activism, while at the same time strongly supporting the Equal Rights Amendment. During this period, Mrs. Carlton published a number of articles in local journals on the rights of women and children. Mrs. Carlton's contributions earned her recognition in Who's Who in Virginia and Community Leaders of Virginia. A devoted family historian, Mrs. Carlton avidly collected photographs, portraits and other archival material relating to her ancestors dating back many centuries. Loved ones Mrs. Carlton leaves behind include her cousin, Jane Crenshaw Avera of Richmond; nephew, Peter Giles of Roanoke; nephew, Paul Giles of Occoquan; niece, Judy Lowman of Fredericksburg; and niece, Martha Poarch (Giles) Sledd of Roanoke; and six great-nieces and nephews. Preceding Mrs. Carlton in death are her beloved husband, Louis; her sister, Judith (Woolfolk) Giles; and her niece, Judith (Giles) Compton. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with a 2 p.m. memorial service following in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond.
