From "The Hawk Eye" in Burlington, Iowa, July 22, 2010 - Mary Irene Craig, 101, of Salem died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the home of her great-nephew, Gary Septer, where she had lived for the past couple of years. Born Dec. 26, 1909 (should be 1908), in Henry County, she was the daughter of Harry and Ruby Percival Craig. Miss Craig taught in one-room country schools and Denmark Public Schools. She taught English, typing and home economics at Salem High School where she was a sponsor for the school paper and yearbook, girl's basketball coach, senior class sponsor, and director for all the high school plays. She taught English at Mount Pleasant Junior High School when Salem High School closed. She earned a master of arts degree at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, crossword puzzles and travel. She traveled to Italy with other family members to visit her great-niece and family at age 98. Survivors include three nieces, Norene Septer of Fairfield, Diana Craig of Salem and Pamela Oltman of Anamosa; one great-niece; and five great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Visitation will be from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The graveside funeral for Miss Craig will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Salem East Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Palmer officiating. Memorials have been established for Crew Public Library and Lewelling Museum, both in Salem.
