She is the daughter of John Fedorovich Poppin (1872-1967) and Hazel Nicholas Seminoff (1887-1968). They had two sons, George and John. Sadly their marriage ended in divorce. He (George John Poppin) wrote a short bio for his book. This is a short exerpt in memory of the spirt of his sister Mary. "Let's go back a few years to 1930 .... to CENTER Grammar School in Vanden (Fairfield) CA. Center Grammar school is on Vanden Drive, which connects Vanden to Elmira, CA,...next to the Southern Pacific railroad underpass of the Northern Pacific electric railroad. The school stood amidst very tall eucalyptus trees. It was a one-roomed schoolhouse with a centrally located iron heating stove and a long stovepipe extending to the rooftop. It had about eight rows of desks and was attended by 20-25 students from surrounding areas. Mrs. Messner was our teacher who was rather short and conducted all eight grades. Two in one grade, three in another, etc. My sister Mary and Tony Samo were the only two in the eighth grade. After Mary graduated from Center Grammar School she departed to San Francisco to live with John, Alice, Jim and Nell in a rented flat on Potrero Hill. Being rather tall and appearing a bit older than the fourteen years of age, which she was, she managed to get a job at the Galland Mercantile Laundry with Alice and Nell. There went Mary's chances of attending high school. It was off to work....forget about a further education. So began her tenure of employment...in the laundries of San Francisco from which she moved a few years down the road. My very early memories of sister Mary, from the early days of Central Grammar school when we lived on the Fuller Ranch west of Lincoln, CA in the mid 1920's, are all very pleasant. The presidential election of 1928 presented an opportunity for Mary to demonstrate her "fight" for the poor. She adamantly supported Governor Al Smith, the Democratic candidate. Herbert Hoover ,a Republican, opposed Al Smith. Mary presented many sound opinions during our classroom debates as to who would be the better president. "Down with Hoover!! Hooray for Al Smith" she shouted with joy. Sister Mary was tall and attractive . Her dark brown hair and hazel eyes brought out her nice personality." ========================== June 2, 2002 Notes from Nancy I don't remember Aunt Mary that closely. The only time I would see her is when we would visit Dad's parents on Rhode Island Street. She lived upstairs. Mary had two sons, George and John. When we came over to visit, they would come down the stairs and look at us, but I don't recall ever talking with them. Cousin John said he remembers he and his brother coming to our home and spent the night. I must have been pretty young, because I don't remember. It was only until I starting writing Dad's book that I came back into contact with George and John. John and I have talked often on the phone and remaining in contact. George and I use the computer to communicate. Such great guys!
