Moriarty received word this forenoon that his mother, Mrs. Mary Moriarty, aged 90 years, died at two o'clock this morning at Marshalltown, where she was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Brennan. Washington was her home, but she had been spending several weeks at Marshalltown. The body will be brought to Washington Monday evening, and funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at nine o'clock at St. James Catholic church, of which she was a member. Internment will be in Elm Grove cemetery. All of her children will be here for the funeral services, including M. J. Moriarty of Linden, Iowa, J. G. of Washington, Daniel of Des Moines, Mrs. Brennan of Marshalltown, Mrs. Tom O'Connor of Haskins, P. J. Moriarty of Des Moines, and Mrs. O. P. Nichols of Afton, Ia. Mrs. Moriarty was a native of Ireland. She had lived in Washington since 1869. Washington Evening Journal 8 Feb 1920 Another pioneer has gone to her reward, Mrs. Mary Moriarty died in Marshalltown and was brought here for burial last Thursday. She was with plenty of this world's good, granddaughter, Christy Moriarty, in Elm Grove. Mary McCarthy Moriarty was born in Ireland December 25, 1829, and came to Canada about 1849. She was married to Patrick Moriarty and moved to Iowa landing in Highland township. There her husband died in 1871, having been injured by a falling house they were moving. He lingered for ten months and died and was buried in the Schnoebelen cemetery, west of Riverside, by the side of his father, John Moriarty. His father was 101 when he died. The children of Mrs. Moriarty are all living and they are: M.J. Moriarty of Linden, Iowa; John Moriarty of Washington; Dan Moriarty, of Des Moines; Mrs. Jerry Brennan, of Marshalltown, Mrs. Tom O'Connor, of Haskins, and Mrs. D.O. Nochols, of Afton. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Brennan. All the children were here for the funeral except Mrs. Nichols, whose family was detained by illness. Mrs. Moriarty proved her Christianity by her works. She raised her own family, her son John's, and her son Dan's, all whose families were left motherless and her own fatherless. She was a devout Catholic, and her priest at Marshalltown administered extreme unction according to the rites of her church, and she passed away chanting, "Hold the Fort, for I Am Coming," an unusual thing, as she had not been known to sing in her strength and health. She was glad to go and ready to go. Her pallbearers were old time friends, being D.J. Leepey, Tim Brennan, John O'Connor, John Flynn, John Scannell, and Leo Shelangouskl. Service were held at St. James church by the pastor, Father Hartigan. She had twenty-six grand children and fourteen great grand children. A good woman has gone to her rest.
