Mrs. Mary Newman, one of the pioneer residents of the Groton community answered the last summons Monday afternoon, July 15, at her home in Groton. She had been in failing health for several years but seriously ill only during the past two months. The end came quite suddenly, her physician having called at her bedside only an hour or so earlier when her condition gave little indication that death was so near. She was born Mary J. Ramsden in Stillwater, Minn., on October 31, 1860 and grew to womanhood in that community. She was married to William H. Newman in 1878 and the family came to Dakota Territory in 1885, settling on a farm eight miles southwest of Groton. They made their home there until 1907, when they moved to Groton. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive, namely, Guy Newman, Phillip, S. D.; Mrs. A. Anderson, Groton; Mrs. Hugh Brown, Lead, S. D., and Miss Gladys Newman, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Two sons, Roy and Earl preceded her in death as did her husband, who died in December, 1921. Surviving, also are 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. During the time she made her home in Groton, Mrs. Newman won a large circle of friends, who knew her as a woman of the old school, devoted to her home and family, and a good neighbor and steadfast friend. In common with most of the pioneer settlers she went through many hardships, but loved her adopted State and her prairie home to the end. Funeral exercises will be conducted on Friday afternoon, but the hour could not be determined Wednesday, being dependent upon the arrival of relatives from the West.
