Description	:	Mary J. Strah, age 92 of Ft. Madison passed away at 2:50 AM on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital. She was born March 3, 1923 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Clara Schulte. In 1946 she married Arthur Hunold of St. Paul, Iowa. He passed away in 1971. In 1973 she married George Strah of Fort Madison. He passed away in 1995. Mrs. Strah was a retired elementary school teacher. Madison passed away at 2:50 AM on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital. She was born March 3, 1923 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Clara Schulte. In 1946 she married Arthur Hunold of St. Paul, Iowa. He passed away in 1971. In 1973 she married George Strah of Fort Madison. He passed away in 1995. Mrs. Strah was a retired elementary school teacher. She obtained her B.A. Degree in Education from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt.Pleasant, Iowa. She taught thirty years, the first ten in one room schools and Catholic schools, finishing her career in Fort Madison public schools. She and her first husband farmed fifteen years in the St. Paul area. She was named outstanding 4-H Leader of the year, was an avid square dancer in Circle Square B Promenaders, and secretary of the club. She helped organize and was a member of a country line dance group, Silver Senior Steppers, and sang with the Pen City Singers. She was the Newberry Senior Center secretary, member and secretary of Denmark Senior Citizens Club, member of Chamber of Commerce PRIDE committee, and lifetime member of I.S.E.A. and N.E.A. She was chosen as the first woman to be awarded Senior of the Year in 1991. She was also awarded volunteer service award from AARP. Mary was an active member of R.S.V.P., and received the President's Volunteer Service Award. From the Soroptimist Club she received the Woman of Distinction Award in the field of education. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, active in Altar Rosary Society, and Catholic Ladies Association. She was member of the Passport Club and the Fort Madison Three Score and More Club. Mary is survived by one son Leroy (Cindy) Hunold of Smithville, MO., a daughter Susan (Loren) VanEssen of Johnston, IA., five grandchildren, Nathaniel (Angie) Hunold of Gladstone, MO., Christian (Weichun) Hunold of Warrensburg, MO., Rachel Hunold of Smithville MO., Kelsey VanEssen of Tempe, AZ., and Jordan VanEssen of Johnston, IA. and one great grandson. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: John (Irene) Schulte of Maryville, MO, Robert Schulte of Maryville, MO., Nancy (Tom) Townsend of Maryville, MO., and Patricia (Ed) Cook of Carleton, MI. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, one sister, and sister-in-law. The funeral mass will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. David Wilkening officiating. There will be a rosary recited at 9 AM on Friday, May 1, 2015 at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory where the family will meet with friends from 9:30-10:30 AM following the rosary. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Sacred Heart Church.
