The following is an exerpt of a news clipping, no publication name or date: Mary Jane Bond was born in Massachusetts, September 8, 1853. She came with her parents to Iowa in 1885, settling near Lamont, Buchanan County, where she spent her early childhood. In 1867 she moved with her mother to Fayette County, Iowa. She married Charles Eckheart on March 14, 1883 and the made their home in Arlington, Iowa. To them were born five children, two of them died in infancy. The surviving children are: Estella Sarah (Mrs. Axel Beck), Milo Eckheart, Florence Eckheart. They moved to South Dakota in 1897 where they resided until the fall of 1908 when she came to Elma, Iowa to keep house for her brother, E.B. Bond. She was taken sick in July, 1909 and was a great sufferer until death relieved her February 26, 1910. While living in Arlington she united with the Methodist Church and ever lived a true member, and when we say Mary Jane Bond Eckheart was a true woman, a devoted mother, and an affectionate sister we have paid her the highest tribute. She leaves to mourn her loss three children, two grandchildren, four brothers, two sisters and many friends. The brothers are Hiram E. Bond and Nathaniel L. Bond of Arlington, E. Bond of Lamont, E.B. Bond of Elma, Iowa. The sisters are Mrs. Al Bush, of Valley Center, Kansas, and Mrs. W.W. Logan of Williams Iowa. The Funeral was held at the Methodist Church Tuesday, at 1 o'clock and was well attended. Music was furnished by a quartette consisitng of Miss Berta Deming, Mrs. Dr. Taylor, Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Moyer. Burial was in the Taylorsville Cemetery. __________ When you read the article above, it was hastily written. Mary Jane Bond's parents did leave Wales Mass. but BY 1865 they were well established in Buchannan County, The BOND's came with a large grouping of immediate family members, included were other Bonds, Cowles, Brooks, and Abbotts. Some of our Brooks relatives along with Luther Hemmingway Abbott seem to have resided in the district and may have been the calling card for the others to follow. Mary Jane's Father died in 1861. Grandfather HIRAM BOND was a wheelwright. The BONDS had been established in the Provincial Mass. since the 1600's. Following the death of HIRAM; Sarah Cowles Bond marries her cousin Luther Abbott a widower himself. He then raised her family as his own from then on. This seems to be the reason for the move from Buchannan to Fayette County. Mary Jane and Charley ECKHART had two baby girls, Myrtle May and Ruby are believed to be buried beside her in the Taylorsville Cemetery. Record's prove Charles Eckhart secured the plot prior to migrating to South Dakota. There are five burial's and one weathered head stone. It is the children's stone or that of CHARLES ECKART's father or sister; Peter Eckart (death Oct 31, 1874) and Eliza Eckardt (death Nov. 29, 1880). MARY JANE BONDS MOTHER IN LAW--Charles mother; Mary Meal is buried in an unknown cemetery. Following the premature death of her husband, Peter Eckhardt Mary Meal Eckhardt remarries. SHE is found living with her Daughter near Storm Lake Mary (Eckheart) Wise; wife of Theodore Wise . Later she is living with her son George as Mrs. Mary Chelser. Family legend has it that Mary Jane Bond Eckarts husband Charles lost his fortune trying to eek out a living in South Dakota and then everything else deteriorated from there. Having suffered desertion by her husband Charles, Mary Jane returned to Elma Iowa about 1908 with Aunt Florence, but Mary Jane's health failed. Family legend says that because of her separation from her husband she is not buried near other family members. I strongly am impressed that her daughters are beside her. THESE CHILDREN WERE; Myrtle and Ruby Her family although living thousands of miles away, think of her and speak kindly of her nature. Mary Jane Bond Eckhart is my great Great Grandmother.
