Brown, so that much would make sense if one ignored other facts. The Mary J. Brown he married is the subject of this F.A.G. memorial -- the one who died in 1869 at age 28-6-21 and was born 1840 (see McBrides' cemetery book, 1972 edition, p. 202). A child born in 1840 would be about 10 years old in the 1850 census. If one looks at Joshua Brown's household in the 1850 census, he has a 1-year-old child named Mary but no 10-year-old child named Mary. If one looks, however, at the household of Joshua Brown's older brother Elgar Brown in the 1850 census, one sees a 10-year-old child named Mary Brown -- surely the one who married George Barrere Jr. The conclusion is inescapable that Elsie Johnson Ayres attributed the Mary J.
