She was baptized at Holy Savior Catholic Church and attended Holy Savior Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1940. Read More	Mary Jane Henkelman, 85 Feb. 21, 1922 - Sept. 26, 2007 HARLAN - Mary Jane Henkelman was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Rita, LA, to Salvatore and Frances (Lusco) Culotta. She was baptized at Holy Savior Catholic Church and attended Holy Savior Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1940. After her graduation, she worked for the United States Post Office and Raceland Bank and Trust in Lockport, LA. June 4, 1944, Mary Jane married Francis Henkelman in Lockport. Five children were born to this union: Francis, Jr., Ann, Dan, Ruth, and Clem. After moving to Defiance, she worked at the bank in Defiance and helped In the cafeteria at the Defiance-Westphalia Catholic School. She also had the role of beekeeper, helping her husband when he ran over one thousand beehives. After she retired, Mary Jane re sided in Defiance until September 12, 2007, when she was admitted to Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. It was there that she died Sept. 26, 2007, at age 85 years, seven months, and five days. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her children, Francis Jr. and Ann; and her brothers and sister, Antoinette, Sam Jr., Phillip, Joe, Dominlc, Vincent, and Guy. She is survived by her children, Dan Henkelman (Barbara) of Omaha, NE; Ruth Henkelman of Harlan; and Clem Henkelman of Defiance, and his friend, Roxie Meisenger of Plattsmouth, NE; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Anna Culotta of Lockport, LA; Sarah (Milton) Vedros of Lockport; Frank Culotta (Mary) of Lafayette, LA; and Ruth Culotta of Lockport; nieces and nephews; other family relatives; and her special friend, Opal Jensen. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Oct.23, 2007, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, with Father Tom Coenen celebrating. Honorary casket bearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket bearers were Doug Schmitz, Denny Kenkel, Terry Kenkel, Tim Kenkel, Ed Schmitz and Bill Schaben. Burial was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance. Henkelman was born May 31, 1925 at Manilla to Francis Louis and Ann Elizabeth McCaffery Henkelman. He has two brothers and five sisters. His parents moved to Defiance in 1928. He attended St. Paul's School. Frank worked for Old Taylor Bee Co. in Harlan. When Taylor went to Louisiana with bees Frank went with them. He married his wife Mary Jane on June 4, 1944 in Lockport, Louisiana. Mary Jane was born February 21, 1922 in Lockport to Salvatore and Frances Lusco Culotta. Her parents came from Italy. Her father was born January 15, 1887 and died May 8, 1980. Her mother was born January 27, 1890 and died March 26, 1970. Mary Jane has seven brothers and five sisters: Antoinette, Phillip, Sam Jr., Dominic, Joseph, Anna, Vincent, Gaetona, Frances Sarah, Frank and Ruth. Mary Jane graduated from high school June 8, 1940. After graduation she worked for her mother in a grocery store and helped her dad on a farm. She worked for the U.S. Post Office and Raceland Bank and Trust Co. of Lockport until her marriage. Frank and Mary Jane moved to Defiance and this has been their home for the past 37 years. Frank served with the American Division in the Philippines in World War II. After his discharge from service he returned to Defiance. He purchased 500 hives of bees from Old Taylor Bee Co. They are both members of the American Beekeeping Federation, Iowa Honey Producers, and South-west Honey Producers. Frank has served as President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer through the years. At present he is President. Mary Jane is serving her sixth year as Secretary-Treasurer. They are members of Sioux Honey Association. Frank and Mary have been active in the community. He served two terms as Mayor from 1964 to 1968; he started the ball rolling for the Defiance Sewer System; he was Scout Master three years; two years as Vice President of the Holy Name Society; a member of American Legion Post #707. serving as Commander at present and he is also County Commander. Mary is a member of St. Peter's Altar Society. was president in 1964. She compiled the cookbook while president. She worked in the Defiance-Westphalia school lunch program for ten years. and also substituted for three years. worked in the Defiance State Bank for two and a half years, and is a member of the Shelby County CowBelles. She served three years on St. Michael School Board as alternate. Their children are: Francis Jr.. died in infancy, born April 7, 1945. Ann Frances, born August 12, 1947. She attended and graduated from St. Paul's School and is a graduate of College of St. Mary's, Omaha. She taught at Notre Dame Academy, was financial aid director for the College of St. Mary , and worked at University of Nebraska and University of Nebraska Medical Center. She married James V. Ortman, M.D.. on December 23, 1972. He is a graduate of Creighton University, served three years in the Army, and opened a medical office in Omaha. They have four children: Julie, Nicole, Christopher, Dan, and Kathryn, born New Year's Day, 1982. Dan was born November 20, 1948, and is a graduate of St. Paul's School. He attended Creighton University and graduated from Parson's College with a degree in business. He manages the West Circulation Department for Omaha World Herald. Ruth was born June 29, 1952. She attended St. Paul and graduated from Harlan High School and is a graduate of the College of St. Mary . She catalogued and established the central library for Defiance- Westphalia School. She is employed at Variety Distributors in Harlan and lives at home. Clem, born August 23, 1959, attended St. Paul' s and graduated from Harlan High School. He is employed at Harlan Auto Mart and lives at home.
