At times in the past year death seemed very near but each time she rallied until the final illness which brought the end very suddenly. The funeral was held on Monday at 10 o'clock from the house conducted by Revs. W. H. Parker and J. L . Boyd and burial took place in the Dillavou cemetery. We are indebted to Editor W. R. Orchard of the Nonpareil for the following obituary: Mary J. Ford was born in Wayne county, Ohio, August 3, 1843. She was on the date of her death 70 years, 8 months and 29 days old. She came to Iowa with her parents as a little girl and the family lived for a time in Washington county. Later the family moved to Greene county where in 1862 she was married to Phillip Orchard. Seven children were born to this union, three of whom survive. These are Mrs. James Flood of St. Paul, John W. Orchard of Des Moines, and W. R. Orchard of Council Bluffs. The husband and father of this family died in Glidden in January 1881, where the family had moved from Greene county in 1878. In 1885 Mrs. Orchard married John Postle who died in 1894. She lived thirty-four years in the home which she is today to borne to repose beside her husband and three of her children. Mother sweetly sleeps today. The cares of life are done. She has gone to her reward. For more then fifty years she has toiled faithfully for others. Her face is furrowed with lines of care. Those old hands are wrinkled with labor in the service of those whom she loved. Through the long hours of many weary days and nights this faithful mother has watched beside the fevered bodies of her children. Many times her heart has been wrung with anguish when they have been taken from her. Again and again she returned to the duties of life to toil again and never to falter. Because of her love of God and respect for His word this mother in the sweat of her own face purchased and paid for a large bible on the installment plan. She believed in God and trusted in His promises. She wanted Him to have a place in her life as well as that of her children. The long night of toil and care through which mother has passed has now ended. She stands at the dawn of a brighter day and on the threshold of a better world. And if the long life of struggle in which she asked nothing for herself but gladly surrendered all to those whom she loved is rewarded as the children who stand in love and sorrow at her bier today know it will be then she will henceforth be privileged to walk beside the still waters in the never ending peace which passeth understanding. She will know no more sorrow. Mother does not go down today between the cold and bare peaks of the eternities to rise no more. There is no death. The stars go down to rise again on some other shore. When, in the wisdom of God, mother is called from that dreamless sleep which today holds her dear old form in merciful embrace, it will be to her the sweet tones of the Master's voice as he said to another Mary two thousand years ago, "She hath done what she could."
