Townsend in Toronto, Canada, Oct. 27, 1870. To this union there were born six children all of who lived to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. Henry who is teaching in the Indian school at Wakpala, South Dakota; William living on the farm east of Dows; Alfred now in Nebraska; Eliza Ann Snyder whose home is in Minnesota, Margaret Sophia Jackson of Dows and John a merchant of Clarion, Iowa. Mrs. Townsend was one of the older residents of this community coming with her husband to Iowa Falls in 1881. After a short residence they came to the farm east of Dows where they made their home until nine years ago, since which time they have lived in Dows. During her long residence on the farm. Mrs. Townsend made may fast friends among the neighors for in those early days before the coming of the telephone and mail delivery the neighorly spirit was strong and Mrs. Townsend was one who never failed to respond in calls of need from those about her and her herart must have been greatly cheered during her last illness to have so many old friends come to show their appreciation of her friendship and kindness. During her residence in town Mrs. Townsend endeared herself to all her neighbors and those who came to know her. For many years she has been a patient sufferer from sickness the cause of which was not definitely known until about two months ago when it was found to be a cancer so far developed that no relief could be obtained. After a wasting sickness of two months she passed away on the morning of March 5, 1914, age 67 years, 11 months and 10 days. Mrs. Townsend gave her life to Christ as her Lord many years ago and has been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Dows since 1892. She was a most faithful Christian in her love of the Bible and the house of God and her devotion to the church in all of its activities. When health permitted she was always in her place for the services of the church and her interest and appreciation was an inspriation to those who worked with her. Especially in the Sunday School and Missionary society was her influence felt and while she will be sorely missed in these activies the memory of her fidelity will be a call to renewed consperation of our lives to the serve of the God she loved. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church Saturday after, March 7, at 2:30 conducted by her pastor, J. M. Mahaffy. Many beautiful floral tributes were brought by loving friends and a large company gathered for the quiet impressive service to show their appreciation of this worthy Christian character. The body was laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery. In the passing of Mrs. Townsend the church has lost one of the most loyal and devoted members and the community a true and faithful friend. The memory of her steadfast Christian life and unfailing faith in God must long abide in the hearts of all who knew her. The sympathy of the whole church and community goes out to the bereaved husband and children as they bear the loss of a faithful wife and mother. Contributor: S.
