Smithson, a resident of the valley for 60 years, died at the Ellensburg General Hospital, Tuesday evening, following a long illness. Y., James Holt of Portland, John Smithson of Ellensburg, Mrs. Richard Keller of Seattle and Bruce Smithson in the Army. She was born in Bureau County, Illinois, in 1861, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Goodwin. She came to Ellensburg with her father and brother in 1884 and was married to Mr. Smithson the following year. To them were born three sons, William, Frank, and John and a daughter Catherine, all of whom died before their mother and a daughter, Mrs. Holt, who survives. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. H. C. Park of Greenville, Texas. Her husband came to the valley in 1879 and was one of the best-known citizens of the community, serving as city councilman and mayor in the legislature and in the state senate. He was one of the founders of the Williams-Smithson Hardware Co. in 1882 and was in the meat business for several years. The later years of his life were devoted to the cattle and sheep business, with extensive holdings in the valley and heavy range land interests. He was also for many years president of the Washington State Bank which later under his presidency became the Washington National Bank. He was one of the promoters of the Cascade Canal and was officer of it for many years. He was also one of the promoters of the Ellensburg Irrigation Company. After the death of her husband in December 1940, Mrs. Smithson made her home on the home ranch, just east of Craig Hill. She had been a member of the Episcopal Church since the work was organized here as a mission. The funeral will be held at the Grace Episcopal Church this afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Alvin Potter in charge. Active pallbearers are A. E. Lawson and D. S. Simmons of Yakima, C. C. McGranahan, J. L. Gilmour, Louis Fitterer, Dr. S. M. Farrell and L. J. Gehlen. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. W. A. Taylor, Dr. J. P. Richardson, L. R. Thomas, W. E. Crowley, H. L. Anderson and Charles A. Anderson. Ellensburg Capital, September 1, 1944
