She graduated from St. Francis Xavier School in 1937. She married Ernest Carpenter on Nov. 28, 1940, in Dyersville. They farmed in the Earlville area until their retirement in 1978. She was proud of the fact that they raised many foster children. She had a Panamanian foreign exchange student for a year named Gloria Fuentes-Ho. This relationship became a lifelong friendship. She was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and a member of the Queen of Angels prayer group. Surviving are her husband, Ernie; two daughters, Phyllis Slick, of Luck, Wis., and Ellen (Wayne) Oberbroeckling, of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Vaughn (Sandra) Slick, of Hammond, Wis., and Michael (Christel) Oberbroeckling, of Altoona; a granddaughter, Michelle (Brad) Watson, of Clear Lake; and seven great-grandchildren, John and Jay Slick, Megan, Scott and Joel Watson, and Bailey and Cassidy Oberbroeckling. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie and Herb Keffeler; and a sister, Margaret Gross.
