Description	:	Mary Jane McKay Southerland was the daughter and oldest child of James Robert "Rob" McKay and Nancy Stuart McKay. When her mother died young and her father remarried, she lived with one of her mother's brothers in the Parrottsville area of Cocke County. She married Elbert Southerland. Following Elbert's death in 1899, she and her second son, Adolphus Nathaniel Southerland, and wife and two children briefly moved to Texas to live near her brothers. One of Alfred Southerland's daughters, Loraine Slimp, related that her father, as the youngest child of Elbert and Mary Jane Southerland, went to Texas, as well. His grandfather (Mary Jane's father J.R. (James Robert)) came to Tennessee to get his daughter and take her home with him to Texas, as Mrs. Slimp remembered it. However, as James Robert McKay likely died around 1879, it is likely it was her brother, Jerry McKay, who returned to Tennessee to take her out with the rest of the McKay family. They lived in the Fort Worth area. According to Carl Southerland, they lived in Wise County, Texas, in a little town called Mineral Wells or Park Springs. The rest of the McKay family had already moved to Texas. Mary Jane and her children returned to Greene County. Carl Southerland recalled that they returned because Dolf had appendicitis and the doctor told him that sometimes a change of climate helped. Loraine Slimp recalled that Mary Jane had to return for her health, so perhaps she had appendicitis. Certainly Mary Jane and Alf were back in Greene County by the 1910 census, while Dolf and his family were still in Texas. Perhaps because Dolf's wife was pregnant for Walter Elbert Southerland was born in Texas in July 1910 and was still an infant when the family returned to Tennessee. Belle Renner, an elderly woman who remembered the founding of Mount Olivet Church of Christ, told two of Mary Jane McKay Southerland's descendants that she gave the first $10 for the building of Mount Olivet, which was established in 1911.
