A week ago Saturday a stronger who appeared to be under middle age and weighing 250 pounds called on Prosecutor George Waite and employed him to secure a copy of the will of the late John W Merritt who died last week. The stranger gave his name as Dr EW Merritt of Cleveland and said that he was going to endeavor to break the will. Inasmuch as the late Mr Merritt left his personal property valued at $10,000 to his housekeeper and his farm of 165 acres to his daughter. Miss Merritt had never seen the gentleman before. The stranger made himself at home. Miss Merritt was living alone except a housekeeper. The stranger told that he was a brother of her father and made excuses why he had been detained from attending the funeral. After gaining her confidence he jumped into business. He told her how he was going to break the will and get all property for her. He then explained how he had transacted business for her father and just previous to his death he had purchased a block of government bonds upon the late Mrs Merritt's orders but the full amount was not paid, there remaining sum of $1720 still due. Dr Merritt explained how it would be necessary to have this money at once in order to not allow the bonds to be lost and the girl consented to secure the money with which to close the deal..... placing the money in his pockets he hurriedly thought of a business matter which was pressing him in Springfield and took the car for that city leaving Miss Merritt to return home alone. It didn't dawn on Miss Merritt that she had been swindled until Thursday of last week when she called Attorney C Buroker to her home. The girl was told at one that she had been swindled. The Cleveland authorities were communicated with but they claim no such person lives there. John Merritt never had a brother by that name. Miss Merritt is weak mentally and cannot be held responsible for her acts now. When she was 12 years old she locked herself up in a room at her home and remained there for 14 years, allowing no one to see her but her mother. Even the hired girl was there for 4 years before she knew that a daughter lived in the house. The daughter is so queer that the family could not even keep cows on the farm because the lowing of the animals was more than she could stand. Miss Merritt has only been off her farm twice since she released herself from her room, one of the times being when she attended her fathers funeral last week. C Buroker is named in the will of the late Mr Merritt as trustee and he will make an effort to have a guardian appointed for the unfortunate Miss Merritt. The young lady is 38 years old and she inherited several thousand dollars from her mothers estate some years ago and this is the money that the Mr Smooth took last week.
