Nickols was born November 9, 1830 in Wayne County, Kentucky, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bain in Lineville on Friday, Oct. 17, 1919, age 88 years, 11 months and nine days. The following obituary of Mary Jane Nickols was published in THE NEW HUMESTON ERA in Humeston, Iowa, on October 29, 1919. "Lineville Lady Dies at Age of 89 Years Lineville, Iowa:--Mary J. Nickols was born November 9, 1830 in Wayne County, Kentucky, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bain in Lineville on Friday, Oct. 17, 1919, age 88 years, 11 months and nine days. She was the youngest of two daughters of Abraham and Hilda Nickols. When she was eight years old she lost her mother, but the father cared for the two daughters to the best of his ability. At the age of 17 years she was united in marriage to Mr. Stephen Vaughn on Nov. 5, 1847. After a few years residence in the old Blue Grass state, the young couple set out to make their fortune in the great Northwest Country and finally settled in Wayne Co., Iowa, in 1851, where they settled on a farm north of Lineville. To this union 13 children were born, two of whom died in infancy and a son Jeptha, dying some two years ago, the remaining ten children to survive here. About nine years ago her husband died and for the last eight years [she] has made her home with her daughter Mrs. Wm. Bain in Lineville. The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Bain on last Sunday, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. Hall. Some beautiful floral tributes were presented and a large number attended the services. Interment following at the Evergreen cemetery [in Lineville]."
