Mary Jane Yanda was born August 29, 1928, in Tama, the daughter of James and Anna (Zeman) Yanda. She married William James Phelps on August 29, 1949, in Toledo. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2005. Mary Jane worked the farm for many years and also worked as a waitress at several restaurants. She then went into daycare, until retiring. She was very active with the United Methodist Church of West Branch. She loved to work in the garden, crochet and sew. She loved being around all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Phelps of Kansas and Elizabeth Ann (Kenneth) Aubrecht and Linda Schnoebelen, both of Iowa City; one son, Larry (Cindy) Phelps of El Paso, TX; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Ann Tomlinson of Marshalltown and Dorthy Smith of Melrose. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, Gene Phelps and one sister, Ella Jean DeMeyer. Henderson-Barker Funeral Home
