Description	:	Mary Jo (Davis) Grant, a long-time resident of El Dorado, passed away on Feb. 16, 2016 at the Newton Medical Center. Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado. A light lunch will be provided by the church following the service. Read More	Mary Jo (Davis) Grant, a long-time resident of El Dorado, passed away on Feb. 16, 2016 at the Newton Medical Center. She was born in Southeast Missouri to Gorus Laurels “G. L.” Davis and Bessie (Lemons) Davis. While a student at the University of Kansas she met and married Ervin E. Grant, who was a law student there. They settled in El Dorado, and began their family. Mary Jo and her husband were both very active in their community and in the First United Methodist church in El Dorado for over 60 years. She was active in the music program, directing the Methodist Boys Choir that, at one time, had 50 members. In the 1970s she was hired to work in the Center for Independent Studies at Butler County Junior College in El Dorado and for 16 years remained in that position. After retiring from the junior college she earned her Master’s degree in Counseling at Emporia State University. For the next 25 years she used her degree to help many survivors of abuse. While she had some individual clients, she primarily counseled and led groups for women who couldn’t find help elsewhere. She rarely received any compensation for her work. After working hard to learn alternative therapies to manage her considerable physical pain, Mary Jo sought and earned a PhD in Energy Medicine from Holos University. Her dissertation was published by Sterling Press under the title Dream Power: Can Our Dreams Make Us Well? She was a poet, having some of her poems published in the Sacred Journey Fellowship of Prayer and a book of her complete work of poetry titled Spirit Speak-Poetry that Honors the Sacred was published. Mary Jo was a leader of great ability and a woman of insight and compassion. She was a gifted teacher, musician, writer and counselor. She was an elegant spirit and a source of strength, courage and healing for those lucky enough to have had some time to spend with her. Mary Jo Davis Grant is survived by: daughter, Laurie Grant Brockman (Bruce) of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Randy Grant and fiancée Beth of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandsons, all of whom she loved dearly, Ben Brockman of Minneapolis, Minn., Andrew Brockman and his wife Cassie, of McAlester, Okla., Jackson Grant of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ethan Grant of Tempe, Ariz.; one great-grandchild, Hazel Eris Brockman; a sister, Alyce Jane Layman; numerous cousins and nieces and nephews. The Alabama Chapter of the National Trail of Tears Association, a research organization that was of great interest to Mary Jo, is accepting memorial gift in her honor.
