Evans, living a few miles north of town in Harrison township, at the old pottery location, was the victim of an explosion in which she received such severe burns that death resulted about five hours later. Since their three unmarried sons entered military training, Mr. and Mrs. Evans have been living alone. Mrs. Evans was alone in the house at the time of the sad accident. Seeking to hasten dinner, she undertook to kindle the fire in the range, using a coal oil can which contained a small quantity of oil. Evidently the fire had been smoldering, and when the coal oil touched the fire a violent explosion resulted, in which the bottom was blown entirely out of the can and oil and flames shot about the kitchen with such force that the woodwork and wall paper were scorched and burned. Mr. Evans hearing her screams while out in the barn, rushed to his wife's assistance and managed to put out the flames, but not till her clothes were nearly all burned of her body. Physicians and a trained nurse were hastily summoned from Eddyville, and her burns were dressed, but the bums were so severe and extended so deep that it was seen that her death was but a matter of hours. She was able to recognize members of her family and to talk a little, and she realized the seriousness of her condition and knew that recovery was impossible. She said but little in regard to the details of the accident. She was burned at about 11.30 a.m. and at about five p.m. the same day death relieved the terrible sufferings of this good women, who has done so much for the country of her adoption now having three sons in the service and having done all she could in the various other war activities. HER LIFE HISTORY Mary Jones, daughter of David and Francis Jones, was born at Dowlais Wales, March 30th, 1857, and died September 27th, 1918, at the age of sixty one years and six months. She was married to Thomas J. Evan on June 7th, 1875, at Mountain Ash where they resided for a period of four years, when they moved to Porth Rhondda Valley, Wales, where they stayed for ten years, when they came to Givin, Mahaska county, Iowa, and the have since resided in this vicinity. To this union were born eleven children, two of which died in infancy. Those left to mourn her loss are the husband, Thomas J. Evans, and nine children as follows: Rachel, wife of Wm. Bosley, and Shedrick Evans, of Valley Junction. Sarah, wife of Dave Davis, of Givin. John, Dave and Gwilym Evans, Eddyville. Edris, in the Air Service, stationed at Mineola, Long Island. Hayden, on the U.S.S. Delaware. Ralph, of the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Other surviving relatives include one sister Elizabeth Ann Roes, of Mountain Ash, Wales, fourteen grandchildren and numerous other relatives as well as a large circle of friends who deeply regret the sudden ending of this useful life, and bow with the heartbroken husband and children in their grief over her sudden and unexpected death. Mrs. Evans had raised n large family of children, was a good wife and mother and her death was a severe shock to friends as well as the immediate family. The funeral was held today (Thursday), the procession leaving the home at two p.m. The services which were held at the Congregational Church 2:30 p.m. were conducted by Rev. S. Kilbourn, assisted by Rev. Williams of Givin. Following the sermon, the remains were laid to rest in Highland Cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn. Eddyville Tribune, October 4th, 1918
