Description	:	Mary Josephine “Mary Jo” Gaetze, 82, of Pierre, passed away August 4, 2018. Mary Jo was born in Castlewood, SD to Giles and Mary (Krier) Culey on October 7, 1935. She graduated from Clark High School. She met the love of her life, Peter Gaetze, while she worked as a telephone operator in Miller. They were united in marriage on July 2, 1956 and enjoyed 45 years together. They made their first home in Aberdeen before moving to Mellette in 1969. Mary Jo was born in Castlewood, SD to Giles and Mary (Krier) Culey on October 7, 1935. She graduated from Clark High School. She met the love of her life, Peter Gaetze, while she worked as a telephone operator in Miller. They were united in marriage on July 2, 1956 and enjoyed 45 years together. They made their first home in Aberdeen before moving to Mellette in 1969. After Pete’s death in 2002 Mary Jo moved to Pierre. Mary Jo loved singing, reading, camping, sewing, crocheting and knitting and will be remembered most for her handmade gifts of love which will be cherished by all. Her family will strive to replicate her recipes which never seemed to require measuring spoons or cups when she masterfully put them together. Mary Jo looked forward to Wednesdays when she got together with her special friends for lunch and cards. Mary Jo worked as a secretary at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield and at Northwestern High School in Mellette until her retirement. She was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and River Harmony Lady Barbershop Chorus. Left with many memories are her son Paul (Deb) Gaetze of Pierre, two daughters, Janet Gaetze of Yankton and Pam Gaetze of Pierre, three grandchildren, Jeff (Emily) Gaetze of Pierre and their children Anna, Kyla, Claira and Jackson; Derrick (Amanda) Mattson of Colorado Springs and their children Brianna, Sydney and Josephine; Samantha (Aaron Reiss) of Omaha and their children Lilly and Ava. She is also survived by six half siblings, Dan, Kevin and Michael Culey, Karen Dunkel, Marsha Bakken and Jean Culey and many nieces, nephews, close friends and her beloved dog Katie. She was preceded in death by her husband Pete, son Mark, her parents, two sisters and one half brother.
