Mrs. Mary Gerth, wife of Fred Gerth, one of the early settlers of the county, passed away Saturday from the effects of dropical heart trouble after an illness of three weeks. Mrs. Mary Gerth, wife of Fred Gerth, one of the early settlers of the county, passed away Saturday from the effects of dropical heart trouble after an illness of three weeks. She was almost 71 years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Gerth was born at Fond du Lac, Wis., March 22, 1863. She was married to Mr. Gerth on April 11, 1880, and they came to South Dakota in 1882, proving up on land 2 1/2 miles southwest of James, and since that time have been residents of this county. Six children were born to M. and Mrs. Gerth, all of whom are living, together with the husband. There are four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Fred Reber, Groton; Arno Gerth, Aberdeen; Fred W. Gerth, Aberdeen; Mrs. Minnie McKiver, Groton; Mrs. Vera Mackin, Omaha, Neb.; Miss Isabel Gerth, Aberdeen. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Trinity Lutheran church in James, conducted by Rev. F. E. Wilke, and the remains were laid to rest in Groton cemetery. Mrs. Gerth was a highly esteemed lady and during her long years in South Dakota her life was marked by its spontaneous generosity and a devotion and zeal to her neighbors and friends. She will be sadly missed from the community in which she made her home for a half a century or more. The independent joins with her hosts of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
