She was born June 28, 1930, in Butler County, Iowa, to Minno and Celia (Jepsen) Folkerts. Mary graduated from Bristow High School and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. Mary taught at rural Butler County schools for five years. Hewitt, 89, of Allison, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison, with the assisted care of MercyOne North Iowa Hospice. She was born June 28, 1930, in Butler County, Iowa, to Minno and Celia (Jepsen) Folkerts. Mary graduated from Bristow High School and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. Mary taught at rural Butler County schools for five years. She married Wayne O. Hewitt on December 23, 1951, at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Bristow. They had two children, Stan and Wanda. Mary and Wayne lived and farmed for 35 years in the Bristow area, until they retired and moved to Allison in 1990. Mary was a former member of Bristow United Methodist Church for seventy years, and New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. She was a current member of Allison Congregational Church, being active in many aspects of the church throughout her life, including women's and young adult groups. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed reading, spending time at Allison Library, sewing, gardening, canning, cooking, going on fishing trips to Canada with Wayne and attending family events and activities. She was a supporter and advocate of the American Heart Association. Mary is survived by her son Stan (Connie) Hewitt of Bristow: daughter Wanda (Randi) Thomas of Mason City; grandson Nathan (Laura) Hewitt of Glenview, Illinois and their children Oliver and Vivian; grandson Brandon Thomas of West Des Moines and his children Mazzi and Bodhi; grandson Nick Thomas of Mason City; granddaughter Chelsi (Jesse) Carlson of Mason City; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Ruth Wunsch and Alice Merfeld and nephew Jay Merfeld. Funeral will be November 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the Allison Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in rural Bristow. Visitation will be Monday, November 25th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.
