She can truly be spoken of as one of the best known and loved women of Cheyenne County. To know her was to love her. Mary Land daughter of George Land and Susan Land was born in Chicago, Illinois May 23, 1865 and passed away Jan. 8, 1960 in St. Joseph Hospital, being at the time of her death 94 years of age. Her parents preceded her in death when she was a small child and she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. George Melenday of Savanna, Illinois. It was there she grew to womanhood and married John E. Shepard, January 17, 1884. Their heart's desire was a home and with vision and the words "Go West Young Man," they journeyed as pioneers to Elendale, North Dakota and homesteaded in 1884, after providing up on their land once more they returned to Savanna in 1901. Then again "Go West" and in 1905 they came to Holyoke, Colo. but after five years they moved to Cheyenne County on a farm near Arapahoe. Then to Arapahoe where Mr. Shepard engaged in Insurance business. Wherever they endeared themselves to all who knew them. Grandma Shepard was kind and thoughtful of others and right was right with her but very tolerant with all. She became a Christian and united with the Methodist Church early in life. She has been a Methodist longer than any other person in Cheyenne Wells. Last winter when she when she was in the hospital the local Church honored her with a gift of flowers and took her picture for the paper, which was sent to all Methodist Churches in Colorado and many other places. She was interested in all civic organizations. Her hands were always busy. She loved beauty and her home was a place of neatness, flowers always adorning the windows. At our County Fair her hand work was the winning of many prizes and Blue Ribbons. She was the mother of seven children who were her pride and joy. Her mother and father, husband and one daughter, Hazel Kibbee and one son, Fay preceeded her in death. She leaves to mourn her loss, five children, George of Huntington Beach, Calif., Lora M. Craffoot, Savanna, Ill., Grant E. of Johnson, Kansas, Lee E. of Cheyenne Wells, and Earl J. of Denver, also 18 grandchildren and a number of great-great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. As her passing away came I am sure she would say: When all my labors and trials are o'er. And I am safe on that beautiful shore, Just to be near the dear Lord I adore Will thru the ages be glory for . Friends will be there I have loved long ago; Joy like a river around me will flow; Yet just a smile from my Savior, I know, Will thru the ages be glory for me. When I shall come to the end of my way. When I shall rest at the close of the life's day. When "Welcome Home" I shall hear Jesus say- O! That will be sunrise for me. When life is over and daylight is passed. In Heavens' harbor may my anchor be cast. When I see Jesus at last. O! that will be sunrise for me. Funeral services were held Sunday, January 10, at 2:30 p.m. at the Brentlinger Mortuary with Rev. James Lusher minister of the First Methodist Church officiating and assisted by Mrs. Rachel Boast, minister of the Arapahoe Community Church. Mrs. Ruth Burns and Mrs. Aileen Young sang "Silent Night" and "Little Brown Church In The Vale" with Mrs. Anne Marlinson at the organ. Pallbearers were, Earl Konecne, Merele White, Emil Rehfeld, Wilbur Summers, Lowell Reynolds and Joe Pfost. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery Card of Thanks We wish to thanks R. Keefe, Sisters and hospital staff for their loving care of our Mother and grandmother while she was in the hospital, also her friends for their visits, cards, gifts, and flowers. We also thank everyone for their words and cards of sympathy in the loss of our dear one, and for the food brought in and floral offerings. Yours thoughtfulness and kindness is greatly appreciated.
