Son Issac was born in the (then) wilds of Missouri. In 1830, Mary was 15. Son Issac was followed by daughter Julia Anne Yates, born in 1831 at St. Louis, Missouri. Then by son George A Yates in 1832 in Missouri. On September 9, 1834, Mary Wells married Solomon Hill Yates, in Lee County, Virginia. After their marriage, Mary and Solomon brought 10 more children to life, (for a total of 13). Daughter Rachel E Yates was born in 1835 in Missouri. Daughter Lavina Yates was born in 1837 in Platte Township, (Andrew County), Missouri. Son Benjamin F Yates was born in 1839 in Missouri. Daughter Evaline Yates was born in 1841 in Andrew County, Missouri. Daughter Elizabeth Yates was born in 1843 in Missouri. Son Solomon Yates was born in 1845 in Missouri. Daughter Lucy Annie Yates was born in 1847 in Missouri. Son Samuel F Yates was born in 1849 in Andrew County, Missouri. The 1840 US census indicates Mary {Wells} Yates as residing at Green, Livingston County, Missouri. The 1850 US census indicates Mary {Wells} Yates as residing in Platte (Township), Andrew County, Missouri, USA. In 1855, when her youngest child was born, (e.g. son George L Yates), Mary {Wells} Yates was 40 years of age. The 1860 US census indicates Mary had 6 of her 13 children living with her, son Benjamin Yates (21), Solomon Yates (15), daughter Lucy Yates (12), son Samuel Yates (10), son Zachariah Yates (7) and son George Yates (4). It is possible this move was motivated at least partially to escape pre-Civil War border hostility between Kansas 'free state' and Missouri 'pro-slavery' factions. --------------------------------------------------------- Historical Note: On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces opened fire on Ft, Sumpter, South Carolina, beginning the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). --------------------------------------------------------- On May 5, 1864, at the age of 48, Mary {Wells} Yates and her family departed Missouri by " . . . joined a wagon train headed for Virginia City, Montana.", (from Find-A-Grave Memorial obituary/(previous) biography). The 1870 US census shows Mary Yates and her family residing at Radersberg, Jefferson County, Montana Territory, USA. Only four of her children are listed as living with her; sons Solomon (25), Samuel (20), Zachariah (17) and George L (14) Yates. Also in this census, daughter Lucy Annie Yates (20) is listed under her married name of Annie Miller and residing in Lower Boulder, Jefferson County, Montana Territory, USA. While on the Yellowstone River Expedition of 1874, son Zachariah Yates (21) is killed by Indian warfare; he is the only Expedition member to be lost; Mary is 59 years old. ---------------------------------------------------------- Historical Note: On June 26, 1876, when Mary was 60 years of age, the Battle of Little Big Horn, (e.g. Custer's Last Stand), occurred between the US 7th Cavalry regiment and warriors of the Souix, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and Arapaho tribes. (It is 207 miles, (as the crow flies), between the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, Montana and Radersberg, Jefferson County, Montana, where the Yates family settled.) ---------------------------------------------------------- The 1880 US census shows Mary residing at East Gallatin Valley, Gallatin County, Montana, USA. The 1900 US census shows Mary residing in the household of Samuel Miller in Hillsdale, Gallatin County, Montana. S Miller was probably the husband of her daughter, Lucy Annie {Yates} Miller. A church record from 1901 shows Mary Yates to be a founding member of the Dry Creek Baptist Church, located in Belgrade, Gellatin, Montana, USA. On April 25, 1907, Mary Lavina {Wells} Yates passed at the age of 91. From her obituary in the Bozeman newspaper, Mary " . . . died at the ranch of her son on Dry Creek . . .". She was buried on April 27, 1907, in Bellgrade, Gallatin County, Montana, USA, at the Dry Creek Cemetery, (e.g. the Old Miller Cemetery). ------------------ Previous Bio ------------------- Death of Pioneer Woman Bozeman-April 27-Mrs. Yates, another old-time resident of the Gallatin valley, died yesterday. She was 91 years of age and died at the ranch home of her son on Dry Creek. A number of children survive her. The funeral was held today at the Dry Creek church. Mrs. Yates came to Alder gulch in 1864 and had since been a resident of Montana. Mary J Wells was the daughter of Zachariah and Rebecca Wells. She married Solomon Yates son of William and Cecelia Yates in Lee County, on September 9, 1834. They moved to Gentry County Missouri and Solomon died of cholera in the late 1850's. On May 5, 1864 Granny joined a wagon train headed for Virgina City.
