Mary Lavina Snell, daughter of Franklin and Rachel (Camper) Snell, was born in Henry county, Illinois, on April 13, 1861. In 1867 she moved with her parnets to Missouri, where they lived for about five years; the father died, and Mrs. Snell with her three children returned to their old home at Annawan, and here Lavina grew to womanhood. On July 2nd, 1881, she and Willis A. woodruff were united in marriage at Davenport, Iowa. Four daughters were born to this union. They lived at Annawan until March 1883, when they came to Adair county, and bought their farm north of Canby. Since this time she has lived in this community continuously, excepting eight years spent in the home of her daugher, Mattie. Mrs. Woodruff was devoted to her family, and was keenly alert to their interests. She enjoyed the various arts of homemaking and she retained her interest in these things throughout the yeas. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff retired from work - they rented their farm and purchased her present home in Canby, that they might enjoy the association of their children and old neighbors. Their famiy and many friends united with them in planning for their golden wedding anniversary in 1931. But that year brought them deep sorrow. On January eighth, the first break in the family circle came in the death of their eldest daughter, Lula Long. In June they were called to mourn; this time the passing of their youngest daughter, Mrs. Carrie Tannatt. Five weeks later, on July 11th, occurred the sudden death of Mr. Woodruff, just nine days afer they had completed their fifty years together. Mrs. Woodruff bore her bereavement bravely, finding comfort and solace in her Saviour. Always a lover of plant life, she spent more and more time in her garden, laboring sometimes beyond her strength, but finding peace and enjoyment in her work. Mrs. Woodruff accepted Christ ss her Saviour and united with the Friends Church of Casey during a meeting held at the Woodruff school house in 1893 by Rev. Deborah Smith. When the Canby church was built and this monthly meeting established, she was one of the charter members, only three of whom survive her. She remained a faithful member of our meeting until the close of her life, which came last Tuesday morning, November 19, at Adair, Iowa, where she was a patient at the Larson hospital. She had reached the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 5 days. She is survived by herdaughters, Mrs. Edna Lounsberry of Oskaloosa, and Mrs. Mattie Tannatt, of Fontanelle, Eight granddaughters, six grandsons, and five great grandchildren."
