Mary is the daughter of Benajah Leffingwell and widow of Nathaniel Richards, a son of Capt George Richards. Nathaniel Richards may have died soon after their marriage. Mary Leffingwell, daughter of Benajah and Joanna Leffingwell, was born October 28, 1731 (Vital Records of Norwich, 1913, I:78). Mary Richards married William Billings on April 12, 1757. Their children include: Nathaniel, born September 17, 1758 Abigail, born June 23, 1760; died March 26, 1761 Abigail, born June 12, 1762 Betsey, born June 22, 1764 Richard Leffingwell, born August 24, 1768 (Vital Records of Norwich, I:354.) Mary's husband, Capt William Billings, was a son of Abigail Denison and Capt Roger Billings, and a grandson of William Billings, both of Preston. William, the husband, built their home about 1758. William Billings, a sea captain, died in 1774 of a fever in Dominica while on a voyage to the West Indies. At the time he died he owned the 1758 house and also the Greenleaf house across the street. Mary Leffingwell and William Billings's son Richard Leffingwell Billings, a hatter, died in 1795. In 1796 Mary was living in the Greenleaf house, and the 1758 house, known then as "the widow Billings red house" was occupied by other tenants. This 1758 house was sold by Billings heirs in 1806 to Joseph Coit, of the firm Tracy & Coit. (Mary Elizabeth Perkins, Old Houses of the Antient Town of Norwich, pp. 78–79.)
