She married George Sweeney on July 10, 1933, at Ramona. They lived in Canton and Sioux Falls. In 1949, she helped found and directed the Hope School, a private school for mentally challenged children. She helped organize the South Dakota Association of Retired Children. She was a charter member of the Sioux Chapter of the South Dakota Association. She served as a staff member of the Glen Haven Camp, Estes Park, Colo., a camp for the mentally challenged where many methods of teaching the handicapped were developed. She held membership in the Council for Exceptional Children and the American Association on Mental Deficiency. She lived in Madison for the past several years and was a resident of Beverly Healthcare since 1997. Her husband died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by six brothers. Survivors include a son, Francis of Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter, Mary Ellen Sweeney of Ramona; two grandchildren; two brothers, James Kearin of Fallbrook, Calif., and Eugene Kearin of Northridge, Calif.; and two sisters, Kathryn Engel of Anaheim, Calif., and Lenora Yocom of Torrance, Calif.
