Davis moved from Shelby, Iowa, in 1883 to a farm in Union township, section one, north-west of Persia at age 10 years with his parents, Henry Harrison and Augusta Coats Davis, and brothers William, Wallace, Harry, Louis, Walter and Earl; sisters Laura and Clara. Another son, Robert, was born at this farm in 1884. Clara died at age four and was buried at Valley View cemetery. The family had previously moved from Johnson County, Iowa, to Shelby by covered wagon in 1878, suffering the loss of a small daughter, Augusta M., enroute with burial at Brooklyn, Iowa. R.O. and his brothers and sister attended Valley View school and often told about the blizzard of 1888. Their father came to the school and helped the children home by having them walk single file hanging onto a barb wire fence for guidance and despite torn mittens and fingers they all arrived home safely. After the family moved to Washington township, the children attended Washington No. 1 (Pleasant Ridge) school, which was built on one acre of ground on the Davis farm. Depending on the work schedule, some only attended night school or winter terms. They belonged to the literary group and many debates were held. Calligraphy classes were taught by Harry Davis and Mollie E. Powers. On September 21, 1904, R.O. Davis and Maud Evans, daughter of George and Martha Blakely Evans, were married. They left Tennant by train for St. Louis, Missouri, on their honeymoon where they attended the World Fair Exposition returning to a farm near Magill, where they started farming. Two children, Elsa Raymond, were born here. In 1906, R.O. bought the "Old Davis" farm in Washington township, section two, from his brother, Walter, moving family there in 1907. Nine more children were born on this farm, Martha, Mary, Wilbur, Esther, Margaret, Alice, Bertha, Frances and Robert. The children received their education at Pleasant Ridge and Tennant high school. R.O. and Maude both worked hard trying give their family the best of everything. They many changes in life styles, from the horse and buggy to automobiles, from trains to buses and airplanes, from candles and lamps to electric lights, from cutting and storing ice to the electric. refrigerator and from carrying water by buckets to the modern plumbing conveniences. They both lived to see their family establish homes of their own before retiring. They moved to Tennant for a short time and then to Persia, making their home there until R.O. passed away in December 1950. They lived in around the Persia area until 1952. He was employed as a construction worker on highway 39 until after his marriage. He was employed as a truck driver for Bowles hauling gas from Kansas to Persia, he also did a little farming and worked on the railroad. He was later employed by Bill Champlin in the Champlin garage where he worked until they moved to Logan. Francis and Mary had seven children all were born in the Persia area except Mary Lou. Marion Francis born August 31, 1930 in Persia he married Lotus Meier October 22, 1950 they had two sons Michael and Rick, two grandsons Maxwell and Carl. Michael died September 18, 1981. Marvin Waine born June 22, 1932 in Persia married Ruby Peterson July 12, 1953 they have four children Patricia, Susan, David, and Daniel two grandsons Allen and Aaron Jensen. Merlyn Oliver born, June 25, 1934 in Persia married Ruby Larrison November 9, 1956 they have three children Mark, Cynthia, and Neal and three grandchildren Melissa and Maria Martin and Andrew Luandy. Minnie Mae born May 11, 1939 near Persia married Leland Marco June 30, 1957 they have five children Catherine, Joanne, Roseanne, Mary, and Kelly, and two grandchildren Andrea Marco and Rebecca McQueen. Merrill Dean born January 31, 1948 at Persia married Debra Rademaker May 6, 1928. Melvin Ray born January 31, 1948 at Persia married Bonnie Kraft May 21, 1967 they have two children Julie and Janet. Mary Lou born December 20, 1952 at Logan married Donald Andersen September 2, 1972 they have two children Scott and Jennifer. After leaving Persia in 1952 they moved to Logan where he was employed at the Chevrolet garage until 1957. They then moved to Harlan where he was employed at the Knudson Produce until his retirement.
