Description	:	While still an almost brand new state, Mary Lois's family (the Hilleary's) had already been pioneers of Iowa since its earliest days following the Black Hawk Purchase, in 1833, and subsequently as a fledgling territory in 1838. Her parents were married in Burlington on April 15th, 1841. 1850 - Born on the family farm, White Oak Twp., Mahaska County, Iowa. 1857 - 1859 - Mary's mother dies from an illness in 1857. Father William remarries to Mary Bond Rodgers on March 3rd of 1859, but the marriage is an "unhappy" one, and William hangs himself on August 20th (as mentioned in family letters). An article in the "Daily Missouri Republican" (St. Louis, Missouri) , 4 Sep 1859, Sun , page 2 suggests that William ingested strychnine, but it is probable that this story is media sensationalism, mid-19th century style. 1860 - August 11th, the year after her father's passing, Mary L. (age 9) is still residing in the family home in White Oak. Her step-mother, Mary (age 31), is head of household and has recently given birth to her and William's son, Edwin (4 months old). The elder Mary's brother, Edwin Bond (age 22), is also living on the farm, but his name is written as "Brown". He and Mary the younger's sister, Nancy J(ane) (age 16), are shown as married, the event having taken place the past February the 19th. Isaac L. is the last shown (age 5). Brother John W. and sister Louisa Mildred (Milda) are not shown, as they are residing on their uncle Lewis Hilleary's farm. 1870 - Listed as "L. Bridges" (henceforth, shall be named Lois), age 19, residing in Harrison Twp., Mahaska Co., Iowa at the home of her mother's sister, Nancy Hilleary Bean, Nancy being shown in the census as "N. Beans", age 58. Nancy's husband was William, listed as "W. Beans", age 60, and together they had 8 children, yet only the second youngest is shown in the census, as "W(illiam) Beans", age 23, a farmer like his father. Lois's younger brother is also listed as "I. Bridges", age 15, and has also assumed farming responsibilities. 1880 - College Springs Twp., Page County, Iowa. Lois and husband (of 3 years), Alexander (Alex) McGregor, age 39 have 2 children named Walter, age 1, and unnamed child aged 1 month (eventually named Alexander Wallace). Alexander is a dry goods merchant by trade, and he was born in Scotland, as were his parents. Lois is aged 29 years. She states that her father was born in Indiana, and her mother in Kentucky. 1900 - Marengo., Iowa County, Iowa. Kudos to the census takers lack of penmanship. Or for that matter, lack of attention to detail. Case in point, number of years married listed as 63 years, while Alexander's (last name spelled McGregery) age was listed as 63 and Lois's as 47! That aside, Alex was a landlord who rented the building that he housed boarders in. He was still born in Scotland, as his parents were. Lois's parents were born in Missouri this time around. It is stated that Lois had given birth to 5 children, and all of them are listed here: Walter David, age 21, b. Dec 1878 Alexander, age 20, b. May 1880 Robert Bruce, age 18, b. Feb 1882 Louise Rebecca, age 15, b. July 1884 Floyd, age 8, b. Oct. 1891 Also mentioned is that Alexander emigrated to the U.S. in 1842 and was a naturalized citizen of 58 years. Alex's birth mo/year was listed as Oct 1836, Lois's as Nov. 1852. 1903 to 1910 - Lois and Alexander depart for Saskatchewan, Canada per Alexander's 1917 obituary. They returned after Alex's retirement from farming, and after the census was taken in 1910, so they do not appear in the US census. Daughter Lois Rebecca was married in Page County in 1911. Son Alexander appears, married 6 years, in Nebraska. 1917 - Alex dies after an illness. He is buried solo in Ames, Iowa. In the 1920 Census, Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, Lois, age 70, states that her father was born in Missouri and that her mother was born in Illinois. She is shown as head of household with her son, Bruce. Bruce is shown as being a proprietor of a town building. They resided on 44th Street. She was widowed, her husband having passed in 1917. 1930 - Brandon, Madison County, Montana. Shown as "Mary L.", age 79, in the home of her son Floyd B., age 38, and his wife Adeline, age 32. Floyd and Adeline have been married for 4 years. Floyd owns his home, valued at $2,600, and is a salesman for a seed company and is the proud owner of a radio set. Adeline was born in Montana, her father being born in Germany, her mother of Canadian-English descent. Lois now claims that her father was born in Kentucky, her mother in Illinois. 1940 - Mary L. McGregor, age 89 is living in a small house on Wood and 49th St., Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. According to the census, Lois had completed up to her junior year of High School (H3). She was still a non-paid, widowed housewife of a private family who did receive over $50 from sources other than money wages or salary. Lois was also asked supplementary questions on this census, namely birthplace of father and mother (Missouri and Illinois respectively). Had she been married more than once? No. Age at first marriage? 27. Number of living children born? 5. In her later years (later then 89!), Lois resided with her daughter in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada. More than likely this is where she is buried (possibly cremated, as her daughter was to be).
