Mary Lorraine Smith was the daughter of Harvey Huston and Maria Maude Halterman Smith. She attended Grinnell schools. She was married to Howard Clair Cook on February 8, 1941 in the Methodist Parsonage in Montezuma, Iowa. To this union four children were born; Sandra, Larry, James and Robert. Mary and Howard first made their home in Grinnell before moving to Montezuma in 1953 where they continued to live until their deaths. Mary was a homemaker and later was a distributor for Avon for many years. Howard died July 21, 1992, but Mary continued to live in the family home until the time of her death. Mary loved her family, her church and the community of Montezuma. She liked collecting Precious Moments, cardinals and snowmen figurines, which she shared with her friends when having coffee gatherings in her home. Mary was very social and enjoyed being with all of her friends at church, her birthday group and the townspeople of Montezuma. She was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Literary Club, the UMW and Dorcas Class, among many other groups.
