Description	:	MARY LOU FARRENS was born Mary Lou Barton to Roscoe H. and Anna M. (Triplett) Barton January 30, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the eldest of four and grew up in Chicago until her senior year of high school when her family moved to Denver, Colorado. Mary Lou had ties to Nebraska through her maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Triplett of Herman, Nebraska. It was through them and her attendance at Dana College that she met Vaughn Abbott Farrens. (Triplett) Barton January 30, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the eldest of four and grew up in Chicago until her senior year of high school when her family moved to Denver, Colorado. Mary Lou had ties to Nebraska through her maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Triplett of Herman, Nebraska. It was through them and her attendance at Dana College that she met Vaughn Abbott Farrens. Mary Lou and Vaughn were married February 23, 1957 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah. Mary Lou and Vaughn raised their family on the Farrens Family Farm outside of Tekamah. Mary Lou taught at Mount Olive School, working with special needs children before becoming a full time mom and farm wife. Mary Lou made sure the family was involved in 4-H, Bible School, Sunday School, Youth group and many other activities. Mary Lou and Vaughn square danced and belonged to a long time card club with five other couples. These six couples got together every month to share a meal and play Pinochle. The five other couples were Jerry and Jerris Palmer, Vern and Veda Hanson, Daryl and Shirley Bromm, John and Gerri Gammel and Earl and Kay Baker. Mary Lou teamed up with long-time friend, Ramona Benson and together they painted, wallpapered and redecorated many houses in the greater Burt County area. She also worked for years as a fashion consultant through a home-party business. In addition to having fun with selling clothing, she fitted women who'd had mastectomies with prosthetics. Mary Lou enjoyed travel and with her mother and sister, had an opportunity to visit the country of origin of her maternal grandparents, Denmark and other Scandinavian Countries. She also had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong, Hawaii and several places throughout the United States. Mary Lou enjoyed many activities including decorating, sewing, gardening, and baking. She prided herself in growing, cooking and baking delicious food for her families and friends. Her love of gardening, along with her commitment to 4-H are traditions that her children and grandchildren carry on. When Mary Lou was in the hospital during her final week with us; her granddaughter, Mariah, brought a book filled with essays on peace and non violence, to share. Together, we read the essay called, "Do Great Things in a Small Way" which discussed the conditions of a peaceful heart and peaceful society as including prayer and service. This resonated as we read it and shared memories together with her. Mary Lou can be remembered for many things including her sense of style, her wit, her laughter, her great cooking. One of the most important things we will remember her for is her service to others. Whether visiting children at the orphanage in Fremont, inviting people to her home for holidays who didn't have family in the area, or engaging complete strangers in conversations in a genuine exchange and interest in getting to know them, Mary Lou spent many years as a living example of service to others. It was difficult for her when she could no longer serve on various church committees or participate in other service activities that she had enjoyed so much during the years. Mary Lou was liberated from the bonds of this earth and this existence on June 16, 2011. She is preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Farrens; sister, Beverly Kelley; parents, Roscoe and Anna Barton. Survivors include her two brothers, Richard and Douglas Barton of Colorado; and her children, nine grandchildren and great grandson, Henry and Linda Farrens and daughters, Mariah and Leia of Tekamah; William and sons, Donovan and Devin of Omaha; Luanne Templeton and daughters, Melinda and Jaclyn of New Mexico and great grandson Benjamin Broderick, Raymond and Kathy Farrens and daughters, Alyssa and Sarah of Gardner, Kansas; Amanda and Alex Farrens of Fremont, Nebraska. FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, June 22, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah. VISITATION: Tuesday, 1 - 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 - 7 p.m. all at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation Wednesday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
