Jensen Seggerman: PORTWOOD, MARY LOU—Mary Lou (Camp) Portwood was born in Davenport, on March 27, 1927, to Dr. C. Cass Camp and Dazel (Peterson) Camp. Mary grew up in Davenport and graduated from Davenport High School in the class of 1944. She so enjoyed her class reunions. Mary attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln for two years, playing the Eb Clarinet in the UNL Marching Band, one of the first women to play in the formerly all-male band. She helped David through dental school and worked as an assistant to Luvicy Hill of the Teachers College, grading papers and proofreading. In fact, she never stopped proofreading, as she rejoiced in finding errors in the State Journal and The Nebraska Signal. She married David A. Portwood on January 18, 1948 in Davenport. The family moved to Geneva in 1952. Besides helping raise the family, Mary started work at her husband’s dental office in 1959, planning to work only until the children were out of high school….then until they were out of college (19776). As it turned out, she continued to work until they both retired on April 15, 1999. Dental patients will remember Mary as a gracious receptionist and keeper of the spittoon (cuspidor). She was a 54-year member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, serving on many committees in the church and was a past president of the Women’s Fellowship. She was also a 62-year member of Geneva Chapter No. 180, Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron several times, as well as having many other offices through the years. Mary also was a member of Chapter O, P.E.O. of Geneva. Mary was proud of her Camp family heritage, particularly the fact that her grandfather, Fred Camp, was one of the first children born to settlers in Geneva and that another of her ancestors, Job Camp, founded Camptown, Pa., the town to which the song, Camptown Races, refers. Mary’s many summer vacations at Lake Andrusia, outside Bemidji, Minn., starting in 1938, developed in her a long-standing love for lakes, fishing, wildlife, and especially, loons. Her hobby was trying to collect every loon picture and figurine she could find. She also enjoyed her cookbook collection, sharing her love of cooking with family and friends. Mary was the family “historian,” keeping a regular diary of everyday happenings. In her later years, Mary greatly enjoyed attending any and all activities in which her grandchildren were involved, whenever she could. She was an avid Nebraska football fan, and enjoyed volunteering at the Geneva Senior Center, delivering meals and serving as the home delivered meal volunteer coordinator. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Don Howard Camp, and sister, Dorothy Wood. She is survived by her husband, Dr. David A. Portwood and children: Linda Portwood Hipp, and husband, Fred; The Rev. Don Portwood and wife Barbara; Nancy Kohler and husband Richard; and Patricia Portwood Eisenach and husband Dr. James Eisenach; grandchildren: Matthew Portwood and wife, Jaina; Benjamin Portwood; Sarah Kuhl and husband Spencer, Daniel Kohler and friend Joni Cassidy; Julia Portwood Hipp, and Jason Portwood Hipp; Laurel Portwood Eisenach and friend, Ed Combs; and David A. Eisenach; brother-in-law, Boden Portwood and wife Jane; brother-in-law, William Wood, and sister-in-law, Patsy Camp; also many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services for Mary were conducted from the First Congregational United Church of Christ on August 3, with Pastor Chris Lake officiating. Bill Turek provided background music before the service and also provided the recessional of “Night and Day.” Nancy Cradduck played the organ and accompanied the congregation in the singing of “Be Still, My Soul,” and “How Can I Keep From Singing.” Special music was also provided by grandsons, Daniel Kohler and Benjamin Portwood as they sang, “Home.” Pallbearers for the service were Benjamin Portwood, Jason Hipp, Daniel Kohler, David Eisenach, Spencer Kuhl, Shaun Farmer and John Steider. Honorary bearers were Sarah Kuhl, Julia Hipp, Laurel Eisenach, Jaina Portwood, Matthew Portwood, Mervell Bumgarner, Herman Larsen and Dr. Richard Bradley. Interment was held at the Geneva Public Cemetery.
