Description	:	Mary Lou McCauley was born in Phoenix, AZ on August 6, 1931, and passed away at home in Eureka, CA on October 31, 2012 after a brief illness with her family by her side. When Mom was six days old, she moved to California by railroad with her mother and older sister Shirley, as doctors said she would not survive the extreme heat of Arizona. Read More	Mary Lou McCauley was born in Phoenix, AZ on August 6, 1931, and passed away at home in Eureka, CA on October 31, 2012 after a brief illness with her family by her side. When Mom was six days old, she moved to California by railroad with her mother and older sister Shirley, as doctors said she would not survive the extreme heat of Arizona. Eventually she settled in the Salyer and Burnt Ranch communities of Trinity County where she was raised by her grandmother. Following her grade school years in Trinity County, Mom relocated to Klamath Falls, OR, to live with her parents and younger sister Beverly. She spent her Freshman and Sophomore years in Klamath Falls, moving to Redmond to complete her Junior and Senior years where she graduated with honors in 1950. Mom excelled in academics, basketball and tennis, going on to the state finals. She was also an accomplished writer of poetry and short stories. Following graduation from Redmond High School, Mom moved to Eureka with plans to attend nursing school. Those plans changed when she met her first husband, William J. "Bill" Startare who she married in the Fall of that year. Mom worked in the jewelry and restaurant business for many years, most recently at Coney Island. After retiring from Coney Island, Mom volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital which she truly enjoyed. Mom loved her music, a glass of wine or a long neck beer, her San Francisco Giants, and was well known for her quick wit and sense of humor. During her last days, she listened to the playoff and World Series games, so thrilled that her Giants had won. Mary Lou is survived by her son, David Startare and wife Tamara, daugther, Diane Startare-Viale and husband Clifford, all of Eureka; son, Dennis Startare of Sonoma; sister, Beverly Dame and husband Charles of Eureka. Also surviving her are grandchildren, Anthony "AJ" Viale of Rohnert Park, Angela Viale-Bates (Mason) of Santa Rosa, Jennifer Mrotzek (Nathan) of Eureka, and Will Startate (Valerie) of Arcata; Great Grandchildren, Sophia Bates of Santa Rosa, Silas, Ezra and Gideon Mrotzek of Eureka, and Lauren Vest of Grants Pass, OR. Mary Lou is also survived by a loving extended family including Ken and Kerry McCauley, Karen and Lee Thomas, Kathleen McCauley and their families; Cheryl and James Orr, Elsie Berti, Scott Mellon, Ken Griffin and Glenda Hicks. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Jack M McCauley; parents, George P Clarke, Horace and Ruth Hazen; sister, Shirley and infant brother Donald Clarke. The family would like to thank Hospice of Humboldt for their kindness and compassion during our mother's final weeks. We could not have made it through this difficult time without your love and support. We would also like to thank Visiting Angels, Joyce Cooper, and neighbor Donna Moore. Also, to Ann Lynch and Father Eric Freed from St. Bernard's Parish for giving Mom the peace she needed to let go. Lastly, a special thank you to Dr. Jack Irvine and his staff at Eureka Internal Medicine for the many years of friendship and loving care they gave our mother. Private family graveside services were held at St. Bernard's Cemetery on Monday, November 5 where Mom was laid to rest alongside her beloved Jack. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Humboldt 2010 Myrtle Ave., Eureka, CA 95501, or to Sonoma Developmental Center - Stoneman Unit, c/o McCauley Memorial, PO Box 1493, Eldridge, CA 95431.
