She was born November 7, 1928, in Washington Township in Paulding County, the daughter of James and Rhea (Switzer) Curtis. She married Steve Black Sr. on March 9, 1948, who passed December 21, 1985. She was born November 7, 1928, in Washington Township in Paulding County, the daughter of James and Rhea (Switzer) Curtis. She married Steve Black Sr. on March 9, 1948, who passed December 21, 1985. She was a graduate of Grover Hill High School. Mary never missed a day of school in 12 years and was valedictorian of her class. She worked at GM for 27 years and retired in 1982. She was a strong believer of the Lord Jesus Christ and a member of the First Assembly of God. Surviving are her children, C. Elaine (Robert) Rayle of Continental, Steve S. (Sandra) Black of Defiance, Java L. (Jeff) Barnwell of Cecil, and Jodi R. (Ralph) Miller of Defiance; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a special man in her heart, Scott Miller, Defiance. Preceding her in death were her husband, Steve Black Sr.; two brothers, Earl (Mae) Curtis and George (Marie) Curtis; her special sister, Helen (George) Clemens; a younger sister, Maggie Curtis; two granddaughters, Tina Rayle and Tiffany Black; a grandson, Stevie Black; and a special young man in her heart, Larry Steele. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Larry Grow officiating. Friends may visit the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of services at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010. Burial will be held at a later date at Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance County.
